How does today’s society want to live? The act of residing in a building is a conservative practice and our basic needs for protection, intimacy and private sphere are justified. Nevertheless, the act of living, or residing, needs to be considered within the context of our ever-changing society, a society that is both culturally and ethnically diverse and that is characterized by a wealth of different lifestyles, which are treasured by society in general despite their own individuality.
How should houses and apartments be constructed so that they will be appreciated and afford those living in them a better quality of life? How can residential buildings aid the development of a stronger community for all generations? And what do residential buildings need to provide to help our city become fairer and more social?
Ten architects are demanding a change in perspective, advocating for “New standards” that would exchange the supposed safety of technical standards for the opportunity to develop discussions on quality. Topics such as how new residential buildings can be made affordable and how people can be encouraged to actively participate in their city will be discussed, alongside other important issues such as how density provides opportunities for urban life. The new standards promote the idea of compact living with flexible spatial structures and encourage lifestyles that are reduced to the essential and enjoy an enriched atmosphere.

Welcome speech by Alexander Vohl, Director of BDA Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart. Prof. Matthias Böttger, artistic director of the DAZ in Berlin will conduct the tour of the exhibition. Prof. Dr. Christine Hannemann, Institute of Housing and Design, University of Stuttgart will deliver a speech on diversity in urban residential models. “Denke nicht in Korridoren!”, is the statement made by Prof. Dr. Sabine Pollak, Koeb & Pollak Architekten, Vienna. “Das unterschiedliche im Nebeneinander”, presented by Gudrun Sack, NÄGELI ARCHITEKTEN, Berlin. The event will be rounded off with a discussion led by Harald Luger, architect and Director of Planning at Siedlungswerk, Stuttgart.
