STEM mentoring for girls
- An orientation program that is worthwhile!
As a mentee, you will benefit from the valuable experience of the mentors in terms of study orientation, the first steps at university, and the typical everyday life of a student.
As a mentor, you will have the unique opportunity to develop personally and professionally through mentoring and gain first experience in advising and leadership.
- What awaits me?
As a mentee, you will be accompanied by a female STEM student at the University of Stuttgart for six months. At regular meetings, you will gain insight into your mentor’s everyday university life. She will be happy to answer all your questions about university studies and you can benefit from her experiences. In this way, getting started with your university studies will be much easier for you! Our program, which is composed of workshops and exchange meetings, will give you the opportunity to also get to know fellow mentees and other mentors. At the events, you will be meeting many STEM enthusiasts, and you will get valuable tips on university studies and program choice.
You are an upper secondary student at a Gymnasium, or at any other school that leads to a higher education entrance qualification, and you are interested in science and engineering subjects? You don’t know yet if and what you would like to study? You would like to know how a study program is structured and organized, and what everyday life is like as a university student? You would like to learn more about the opportunities and study programs offered at university, and you are willing to commit yourself to your future even outside school hours? Then our TryScience mentoring for girls is the right program for you!
Do you remember how you felt about your study program choice? How difficult it was to get an overview in the jungle of study programs and make the right choice? Many girls in upper secondary schools face the same challenge today and have so many questions about university studies and everyday university life. With our mentoring program, we would like to encourage girls in upper secondary who are interested in science and engineering subjects to pursue their interests, and also support them in their program choice - that’s why we need you!
You are at least in the 3rd semester of a STEM bachelor’s degree program or in the 1st semester of a STEM master’s degree program, and you are willing to get involved outside of your studies? Are readiness to help, independence, and open-mindedness among your strengths? Then we look forward to your application to become a mentor!
What awaits you in the TryScience mentoring for girls?
As a mentor, you will be supervising, over a period of approximately six months, one to three female school students (mentee/s) who are interested in studying science or engineering and who would like to learn more about STEM studies and everyday university life.
Mentors and mentees meet at regular intervals, about every four to six weeks, in person, but also via Facebook or other media. At the meetings, mentors share their experiences and help mentees to find the right contact persons at the university. The mentors show their mentees around the university campus and its facilities, attend lectures with them, and give them an insight into their everyday life as a university student.
As a mentor, you will receive training on the mentoring role and on intercultural awareness. In addition, we will organize an event for you, to which we will invite role models from business. At the end of the program, you will receive a certificate of participation as a mentor.
The mentoring program is a unique opportunity for you to develop personally and gain your first experience in advising and leadership.
