Preparatory German language course

After the end of the application period (June 30, 2026), it is not possible any more to apply for winter semester 2026/27.

First of all: Apply for admission

Please apply for admission to the preparatory German course of the University of Stuttgart via the online portal C@mpus. Apply from April 15 through June 30, 2026. If your application was successful, you will be sent a "Vormerkung" (non-binding admission) in May or June.

Letter of admission and invitation to the course

In your "Vormerkung" for winter semester 2026/27, we will inform you how to register for the preparatory German course and what fees are required. You will register for the course by paying the fees of your entrance level and the the placement test fees. The "Vormerkung" will state how much you will have to pay as well as the university's bank details.

Register by paying the entrance level fees and the placement test fees

After receiving the "Vormerkung" for the preparatory German language course, please transfer the entrance level fees + placement test fees by July 15, 2026 to the university's bank account as stated in the "Vormerkung" in order to register for the German course. This payment is your binding registration for the German course.

Please remember: You first have to apply for admission to the preparatory German course of the University of Stuttgart and you have to have got a "Vormerkung". Without a "Vormerkung" for the preparatory German course for the winter semester 2026/27, we will not admit you into the German course even if you pay any fees to the university's bank account.

What do I have to pay later?

Your registration by payment of the fees of the entrance level and our subsequent confirmation of your registration to the German course guarantee you a place in the preparatory German course (you may need this confirmation e.g. for your visa). The registration is binding. After the start of the course, we will ask you to pay the fees of your second course level. Therefore, the fees for the entire semester are paid in two installments: in July for your entrance level registration, and in November for the second course level. If you are placed into the C1 level, there is no second course level and thus no second installment.

For example: You receive a "Vormerkung". The Vormerkung invites you to register for the course by paying EUR 1.050.  These EUR 1.050 are the placement test fees and the fees of your entrance level (the first 9-10 weeks of the course. You register by paying this amount. Afterwards, we send you a confirmation of your payment and your binding registration. You need this confirmation for your visa application. You travel to Stuttgart and start the course in October. After the course start, we will ask you in November to pay another EUR 1.000, i.e. the fees of your second level (the last 9 weeks of the semester). In this way, you will have to pay the course fees for the complete semester (EUR 2.050) in two instalments. one in July and one in November. If you join the course on C1 level there is no second level and no second instalment.

Our confirmation of your course registration

As soon as your payment of your entrance level + placement test fees have been credited to the university's account, we will send you an email. It may take a few days until your payment appears on the university's account and only after that we will be able to send you the email. As long as place is still available in the course, we will confirm to you by this email that you have been registered to the university's preparatory German language course and invite you to the placement test. This confirmation guarantees your place in the course. You may need this confirmation for your visa application.

If you have paid and registered but you haven't received from us any confirmation of your registration for 7 days, please check if you gave us the correct email address (and check your spam folder). We will send our confirmation to the address you gave us while applying. If you are sure you haven't received our confirmation for more than 7 days after your payment, please get in contact with us and send us your transfer receipt.

Places are limited

Please note that the number of places is limited and places in the course will be given to students according to the order of their registration as received by us. If the course is fully booked before July 15, we may decline further registrations even before the deadline. In this case we will put you on a waiting list or - if you do not wish to remain on the waiting list  - refund you the complete fees you paid.

We have got to receive the full amount

Bank transfers from abroad may incur additional charges which you must pay to your bank (please consult your bank). Due to high demand and limited capacity, we cannot accept your course registration unless the fees are received in full on the university’s account.

De-registration?

Your course registration is binding: We guarantee you a place in the course, and you guarantee your participation. If you de-register, refund of your deposit will therefore not be possible. Exception: You cannot attend the course for reasons you cannot be held responsible for, e.g. illness, proven by a medical certificate. The EUR 50 placement test fees will in any case not be refunded.

As long as we offer an online course because students cannot obtain their visa on time (usually the first two weeks), a delayed issue of your visa is not a reason for refunding the fees if you de-register. If your visa application is rejected, we will refund your fees after you proved to us that you applied on time and correctly. The 50 EUR placement test fee will not be refunded.

If you cannot join the course for reasons you cannot be held responsible for, please ask for a refund of the fees within the semester you have registered for. After the end of the semester, the fees you paid cannot be refunded any more.

For technical reasons, it is not possible to move your fees into the following semester: If you cannot join the course for reasons you cannot be held responsible for, please have your fees refunded within the same semester. If you want to register for the course in one the following semesters, you will have to apply and to register again by paying the fees of the entrance level and the placement test fees.

What next?

Once you have registered for the course and received our confirmation of your course registration, please be patient: We will contact youapproximately o ne week after the July 15 registration deadline to inform you of the next steps, including details regarding the placement test.

If you need a visa: Please apply for your visa immediately after registering. For your visa application, you will need our confirmation of your registration, fee payment, and admission.

Placement test

The decision on your entrance level in the course (A2, B1, B2 or C1) will be based on your result in the placement test (onSET) that you will have to take after your course registration and before the start of the course. We will invite you to the placement test in our confirmation of your course registration.

The placement test will take place in September 2026. After the registration deadline, we will inform all registered students about the exact dates and procedures. The test is conducted entirely online, meaning you do not need to be in Stuttgart to take it and you can do it at home. But you do need a computer with microphone and camera and reliable internet connection.

Please check this website regularly for any changes regarding time and form (online or classroom) of the placement test.

If students get their visa too late and cannot be in Stuttgart for the course start, we can offer the course online for the first 2 weeks until the students are able to come to Stuttgart.

If students are rejected their visa or if they get their visa so late that even after the first 2 online weeks they are still not given a visa, they can de-register from the course and will be refunded their course fees minus EUR 50 after proving that they had applied for their visa on time and correctly.

In winter semester 2026/27, classes will be given in classroom teaching with single online days ('hybrid learning').

If students do not get their visa on time and cannot be in Stuttgart for the course start, we can offer the course for the first 2 weeks completely online until the students can come to Stuttgart.

You will finish two levels within one semester: your entrance level (A2, B1, B2 or C1) that we will determine in the placement test and your consecutive level, the level above your entrance level. If you join the course on entrance level C1, there is no connecting level after it.

You will pay the entrance level fees when you register for the course. You will pay the connecting level fees while attending the entrance level.

While you are attending the consecutive level, we will invite you to register for continuing the course in the following semester.

Once you have registered for the entrance level, you do not have to apply again for the consecutive level or the following semester.

After your admission ("Vormerkung") and registration, we guarantee you a place in the course. We will determine your entrance level (A2, B1, B2, or C1) in the placement test that will be conducted a few weeks before the course starts. The placement test consists of a written part and an oral part and will be completely online. So, you do not have to be in Germany for the placement test. Of course, we will consider your certificates as well for the placement decision.

1. Registration and prerequisites

Students can register for the preparatory German language course only after having received an admission (“Vormerkung”)  to the preparatory German course issued by the University's admissions office (“Bewerbung  - Zulassung  - Einschreibung”). Students register for the German course by paying the entrance level course fees plus the placement test fee, to the university's bank account as given in the letter of admission. Students have to register before the registration deadline as stated in the letter of admission. After the payment and the subsequent confirmation by the university, the registration is binding.

Contrary to what is stated above, you can register for the three-week TestDaF training courses without an admission to the University of Stuttgart, provided place is still available. The training courses are not offered currently.

If the number of registrations exceeds the number of places available in the course, further registrations may be declined even before the end of the registration deadline. In this case, the fees paid for registration will be refunded in full.

1. Anmeldung und Voraussetzungen

Voraussetzung für die Anmeldung ist die Zulassung bzw. Vormerkung  zum studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurs der Universität Stuttgart durch die Abteilung Bewerbung  - Zulassung  - Einschreibung. Die Anmeldung erfolgt durch Zahlung der Gebühr der Eingangsstufe (einer Sicherheit nach § 19 Abs. 1 LGebG) zuzüglich der Gebühr für den Einstufungstest in Höhe von EUR 50 (§ 3 Abs. 1 und § 4 Satz 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerbende) auf das in der Vormerkung zum Deutschkurs genannte Konto der Universität Stuttgart. Die Zahlung muss vor dem Ende der in der Vormerkung genannten Anmeldefrist erfolgen. Mit dem Eingang dieser Gebührenzahlung ist die Anmeldung verbindlich, und es erfolgt eine Bestätigung der Anmeldung und Gebührenzahlung per E-Mail.

Abweichend von Satz 1 können in die dreiwöchigen TestDaF-Trainingskurse auch externe Teilnehmende ohne Zulassung zum Studium an der Universität Stuttgart aufgenommen werden (§ 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Diese Trainingskurse werden derzeit nicht angeboten.

Wenn die Zahl der Anmeldungen die Zahl der Plätze im Kurs übersteigt, können weitere Anmeldungen auch bereits vor Ende der Anmeldefrist abgelehnt werden (§ 1 Satz 3 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). In diesem Fall werden sowohl die Kursgebühr als auch die Einstufungstestgebühr in voller Höhe zurückgezahlt.

2. Course Fees

Application is for one semester. The admission and registration is valid for the full semester that the student has applied for and students are enrolled for the full semester as well. Therefore, payment obligations comprise the fees for one full semester.

The fees covering one semester comprise: (1) the placement test fees, (2) the entrance level fees (i.e. the first 9 weeks of the semester) and (3) the subsequent level fees (i.e. the last 9 weeks of the semester). The placement test fees are EUR 50, the course fees are calculated according to the number of teaching units and EUR 5 for each unit.

Payment is done in two instalments: The placement fees (1) and entrance level fees (2) are due at course registration after admission. Payment of the subsequent level fees is due after the start of the course and before the start of the subsequent level.

After course registration and payment of the fees, students of the preparatory German course are enrolled as full students of Stuttgart University if all other requirements are fulfilled.

2. Kursgebühr

Die Bewerbung erfolgt für ein Semester. Die Zulassung bzw. Vormerkung sowie die Anmeldung gilt ebenfalls für das gesamte Semester, für das die Bewerbung erfolgt ist, und die Teilnehmer des Kurses werden für das betreffende Semester eingeschrieben. Daher besteht auch die Zahlungsverpflichtung für die Gesamtgebühr eines Semesters.

Die Gesamtgebühr im Semester besteht aus: (1) der Einstufungstestgebühr, (2) der Kursgebühr der Einstiegsstufe (d.h. der ersten 9 Wochen des Semesters) sowie (3) der Anschlussstufe (d.h. der letzten 9 Wochen des Semesters). Die Einstufungstestgebühr beträgt EU 50 und die Kursgebühren ergeben sich aus dem Unterrichtsumfang in Unterrichtseinheiten à EUR 5 pro Unterrichtseiheit (§ 3 Abs. 2 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen).

Die Zahlung erfolgt in zwei Raten: Die Einstufungsgebühr (1) und die Gebühr der Einstiegsstufe (2) sind beide bei der Anmeldung zum Kurs nach erfolgter Zulassung/Vormerkung fällig und die Kursgebühr der Anschlussstufe (3) nach Kursbeginn und vor Beginn der Anschlussstufe.

Nach Anmeldung unter Zahlung der Einstufungsgebühr und der Kursgebühr der Einstiegsstufe werden die Teilnehmer*innen des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses als Studierende der Universität Stuttgart zum Deutschstudium eingeschrieben, wenn alle anderen Voraussetzungen für die Einschreibung erfüllt sind.

3. Cancellation and refund of registration fees and course fees

Course registration by payment of the entrance level fees and the placement test fees is binding: If you de-register, refund of the fees is only possible if you cannot attend the course due to illness as proven by a medical certificate or if your visa application is rejected after you applied in time and correctly. The placement test fee will not be refunded.

After you paid the complete course fee in the first week after classes started, you will be refunded the course fees in case you wish to de-register only for reasons you cannot be hold accountable for (e.g. if you cannot attend the course due to an illness). In this case you will be refunded the course fees for the part of the course you are not able to attend due to your illness.

The refund of the course fees must be applied for during the semester in question. After the end of the semester, refund of the course fees is not possible any more. It is not possible to transfer fees into the following semester.

After de-registration, students cannot be enrolled as students of Stuttgart University any more.

3. Rücktritt und Erstattung der Gebühren

Die Anmeldung unter Zahlung der Gebühr der Eingangsstufe und Einstufungstestgebühr ist verbindlich. Rücktritt und Erstattung der gezahlten Kursgebühr ist nur möglich bei nachgewiesener krankheitsbedingter Verhinderung des Kursbesuchs oder nach Ablehnung des Visumsantrags, wenn rechtzeitige und korrekte Antragsstellung nachgewiesen wird, ggf. auch aus anderen nachgewiesenen Gründen, die der Bewerber nicht zu verantworten hat. Die Einstufungstestgebühr von EUR 50 wird auch in diesem Fall nicht zurückerstattet (§ 5 Satz 3 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Der Einbehalt der gezahlten Kursgebühr bei Abmeldung dient der Deckung der Kosten, die der Universität durch ihre Leistung der Bereitstellung von Kurslehrkräften in Abhängigkeit von den Anmeldungszahlen entstehen, vgl. § 7 Abs. 1 LGebG.

Auch bei Rücktritt während des Kurses ist eine Erstattung der Kursgebühr nur möglich im Falle von Gründen, welche der Teilnehmer bzw. die Teilnehmerin nicht zu verantworten haben (z.B. nachgewiesene krankheitsbedingte Verhinderung des weiteren Kursbesuchs). In diesem Fall erfolgt die Rückzahlung anteilig für den krankheitsbedingt nicht besuchten Teil des Kurses (§ 5 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen).

Die Erstattung der Gebühren muss innerhalb des Semesters beantragt werden, für das die Anmeldung erfolgt ist. Eine Erstattung der Gebühren nach Ende des Semesters, für das die Anmeldung erfolgt ist, ist nicht möglich. Eine Verschiebung der Gebühr in ein folgendes Semester ist nicht möglich.

Nach Rücktritt und Abmeldung vom Kurs ist eine Einschreibung zum Deutschstudium als Student*in der Universität Stuttgart nicht mehr möglich.

4. Placement test

The email that confirms course registration also invites the student to the compulsory placement test at the start of the course. Students are placed in the different course levels according to their results in the placement test. For the placement of a student on a certain level, the university can ask for certificates that prove that the immediately previous level has already been finished successfully. The university is not obliged to take into account any German language course certificates issued by other institutions. Especially, certificates showing that a level was finished with less than 70% of the avialable score will not be accepted.

Every semester the following levels are offered: (I) A2 level plus subsequent level B1 (18 weeks), (II) B1 level plus subsequent level B2 (18 weeks), (III) B2 level plus subsequent level C1 (18 weeks) and (IV) C1 level (9 weeks).

If students have already attended the preparatory German course offered by the University of Stuttgart in the previous semester, the decision is based on the final exam of the previous course level: If they pass the exam, they proceed onto the next course level, in case of failing they have to repeat the previous course level. In case no final exam is conducted, transition to the next course level depends on regular attendance, i.e. rate of absence of less than 10 %.

If students attended a previous course and did not continue it for one semester or more, a placement test can be done again and its result can be taken into account.

4. Einstufung

Zusammen mit der Bestätigung der Kursanmeldung erfolgt die Einladung zum obligatorischen Einstufungstest, der vor dem Unterrichtsbeginn stattfindet. Die Zuweisung zu einer Kursstufe erfolgt aufgrund des Ergebnisses des Einstufungstests (§ 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Für die Einstufung in eine Kursstufe aufgrund des Einstufungstestergebnisses kann der Nachweis des erfolgreichen Abschlusses der vorhergehenden Kursstufe verlangt werden. Ein Anspruch auf Anerkennung von Zeugnissen bisheriger Kursbesuche an anderen Institutionen besteht nicht. Insbesondere werden i.d.R. Zeugnisse nicht anerkannt, die nicht mit mindestens “befriedigend” (d.h. mindestens 70% der erreichbaren Punktzahl) abgeschlossen wurden.

In jedem Semester werden angeboten: (I) Die Kursstufe A2 mit Anschlussstufe B1 (18 Wochen Kursdauer), (II) die Kursstufe B1 mit Anschlussstufe B2 (18 Wochen Kursdauer), (III) die Kursstufe B2 mit Anschlussstufe C1 (18 Wochen Kursdauer) und (IV) die Kursstufe C1 (9 Wochen Kursdauer). 

Im Falle der Fortführung des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses der Universität Stuttgart nach vorherigem Besuch einer Kursstufe des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses entscheidet das Ergebnis der Abschlussprüfung der vorhergehenden Kursstufe: Bei Bestehen erfolgt die Einstufung in die nächsthöhere Kursstufe, bei Nichtbestehen muss die vorher besuchte Kursstufe wiederholt werden. Wenn keine Abschlussprüfung durchgeführt wird, ist die Fortsetzung auf der nächsten Kursstufe an vorherige regelmäßige Teilnahme gebunden, d.h. unentschuldigte Fehlzeiten von nicht mehr als 10 %.

Wenn zwischen dem vorherigen Kursbesuch und der Fortsetzung des Deutschkurses der Kurs ein Semester oder mehr nicht besucht wurde, kann eine erneute Einstufung durchgeführt werden und die Zuweisung zu einer Kursstufe aufgrund des Ergebnisses dieser Einstufung erfolgen. Als Nicht-Besuch des Kurses in diesem Sinne gilt auch, wenn im vorherigen Kurs unentschuldigte Fehlzeiten von über 10 % vorliegen.

5. Certificates and duplicates

Any kind of certification requires that students attend the course regularly. At the end of each course level, every student is given a certificate of performance (Zeugnis) that states the results of the final exam and the number of teaching units (Unterrichtseinheiten). If a student attended the course regularly without taking the final examination or if no final exam is conducted, students are given a certificate of attendance (Teilnahmebescheinigung) which states the number of teaching units. In order to be given any certificate, students are required not to miss more than 10 % of their classes. Attendance and absence is documented on the attendance lists as kept by the teachers. Duplicates of certificates can be issued within 5 years after the attended course. Such duplicates are subject to a charge of EUR 25. More than 5 years after the attended course, certificates or duplicates cannot be issued any more.

5. Zeugnisse, Bescheinigungen, Zweitausfertigungen

Es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht. Am Ende jeder Kursstufe erhält jeder Teilnehmer bzw. jede Teilnehmerin ein Zeugnis, das das Abschlussprüfungsergebnis sowie die besuchten Unterrichtseinheiten ausweist. Wenn der Kurs regelmäßig besucht, aber die Abschlussprüfung nicht absolviert wurde oder keine Abschlussprüfung stattfand, wird eine Teilnahmebescheinigung ausgestellt. Um ein Zeugnis oder eine Teilnahmebescheinigung zu erhalten, dürfen die TeilnehmerInnen nicht mehr als 10 Prozent der Unterrichtszeit der entsprechenden Kursstufe unentschuldigt versäumt haben. Als Nachweis dienen die von den Lehrkräften täglich geführten Anwesenheitslisten. Zweitausfertigungen von Zeugnissen oder Teilnahmebescheinigungen können innerhalb von 5 Jahren nach Kursbesuch ausgestellt werden. Für diese Zweitausfertigungen wird eine Gebühr von EUR 25 erhoben (Anlage zu § 1, lfd. Nr. 11 Allgemeine Gebührensatzung der Universität Stuttgart). Nach Ablauf der 5jährigen Aufbewahrungsfrist können keine Teilnahmebescheinigungen oder Zeugnisse mehr ausgestellt werden.

Starting from summer semester 2026 we will offer an A2 course as well. You can apply for a place in our course already after successfully finishing an A1 course or after at least 250 German course hours.

After receiving the "Vormerkung" for the preparatory German language course, please transfer the amount of EUR 500 (deposit + Placement Test fee) by January 15, 2026 to the university's bank account as stated in the "Vormerkung" in order to register for the German course.

Please remember: You first have to apply for admission to the preparatory German course at the University of Stuttgart and you have to have got a "Vormerkung". Without a "Vormerkung" for the preparatory German course for the summer semester 2026, you will not be admitted into the German course even if you pay EUR 500.

Why EUR 500 and what has still to be paid later?

Your course fee deposit (EUR 450) and Placement Test fee (EUR 50), in total EUR 500, and our subsequent confirmation of your registration to the German course guarantee you a place in the preparatory German course (you may need this confirmation e.g. for your visa). The course fee down payment is a security for us that your course registration is binding. If you attend the course after your registration, these EUR 500 will be deducted from your course fees, i.e. you have already paid EUR 500 and will have to pay only the rest of your course fees.

For example: You paid EUR 500 (deposit + Placement Test fee) and our subsequent confirmation guarantees you a place in the course. You may need our confirmation that you have got a place for your visa application. You do the Placement Test and you are placed e.g. on level B2/C1. The level B2/C1 course fees are EUR 1.600 (please note: not the actual course fees). The EUR 500 you already paid will be deducted from these EUR 1.600. So, you will actually have to pay only EUR 1.100 at the start of the course.

Our confirmation of your course registration

As soon as your EUR 500 (deposit + Placement Test fee) have been credited to the university's account, we will send you an email. It may take up to 5 or 7 days until your payment appears in our account and only after that we will be able to send you the email. As long as place is still available in the course, we will confirm to you by this email that you have been registered to the university's preparatory German language course and invite you to the Placement Test. You may need this confirmation and invitation for your visa application.

Before you arrange a visa application appointment or take any other important steps that our confirmation of your course registration is needed for, please note again that we will send you this confirmation only after your money has arrived on our account.

If you have registered by paying EUR 500 but you don't receive from us any confirmation of your registration for 10 days, please check if you're using the email address you gave us (and check your spam folder). We will send our confirmation to the address you gave us while applying. If you haven't received our confirmation for more than 10 days, please get in contact with us and send us your transfer voucher.

Places are limited

Please note that the number of places is limited and places in the course will be given to students according to the order of their registration fee as received by us. If the course is fully booked before January 15, we may decline further registrations even before the deadline. In this case we will put you on a waiting list or  - if you do not wish to stay on the waiting list  - refund you the complete EUR 500.

We have got to receive EUR 500

There may be additional bank charges on international money transfer that you may have to pay (please ask your bank). Due to the limited places and high demand, incomplete payments or payments to a bank account other than that stated in the "Vormerkung" will not be accepted. 

De-registration?

Your course registration is binding. If you de-register, refund of your deposit will not be possible. Exception: You cannot attend the course for reasons you cannot be held responsible for, e.g. illness, proven by a medical certificate. The EUR 50 Placement Test fees will in any case not be refunded.

We will offer the course online for the first two weeks if students cannot obtain their visa on time. Therefore, a delayed issue of your visa is not a reason for refunding the deposit as long as the course is offered online. If your visa application is rejected, we will refund your deposit after you proved to us that you applied on time and correctly. The 50 EUR Placement Test fee will not be refunded.

If you cannot join the course for reasons you cannot be held responsible for, please ask for a refund of the fees within the semester you have registered for. After the end of the semester, your deposit cannot be refunded any more.

For technical reasons, it is not possible to transfer your registration fees into the following semester: If you cannot join the course for reasons you cannot be held responsible for, please have your fees refunded within the same semester. If you want to register for the course in one the following semesters, you will have to apply and register again by paying the full registration fees.

What next?

After you registered for the course and received our confirmation of your course registration, please wait: About one week after the end of the registration deadline (January 15) we will get in contact with you and inform you about the next steps. We will also inform you about the Placement Test.

Please apply for your visa now. You will probably need our conformation of your course registration for the visa application process.

Placement Test

The decision on your level in the course (A2, B1, B2 or C1) will be based on your result in the written placement test (onSET) and an oral placement test that you will both have to take after your course registration and before the start of the course. We will invite you to the placement tests in our confirmation of your course registration.

Shortly before the placement test, we will offer you to send us any new course certificates. These can be considered in the decision about your level in the course.

About 4 - 7 days before the placement test, we will send you an email that invites you once more to the placement test and contains your user name and password for the placement test. You have to bring your user name and password on the day of the placement test. Please do not try to log in before the placement test. You will log in using your user name and password at the start of the placement test.

Placement test: The placement test will take place in March 2026. After the registration period, we will inform the registeterd students about the exact dates. It will be held online.

Please check this website regularly for any changes regarding time and form (online or classroom) of the placement test.

If students get their visa too late and cannot be in Stuttgart for the course start, we can offer the course online for the first 2 weeks until the students are able to come to Stuttgart.

If students are rejected their visa or if they get their visa so late that even after the first 2 online weeks they are still not given a visa, they can de-register from the course and will be refunded their course fees minus EUR 50 after proving that they had applied for their visa on time and correctly.

In summer semester 2026, classes will be given in classroom teaching with single online days.

If students do not get their visa on time and cannot be in Stuttgart for the course start, we can offer the course for the first 2 weeks completely online until the students can come to Stuttgart.

After your admission and course registration, we guarantee you a place in the course. Your entrance level (A2, B1, B2 or C1) will be decided in a placement test a few weeks before the course starts. The placement test consists of a written test and an oral conversation and will be completely online. Therefore, you do not have to be in Germany for the placement test. We will as well consider for the placement decision your German certificates and German courses you attended before.

1. Registration and prerequisites

Students can register for the preparatory German language course only after having received an admission (“Vormerkung”)  to the preparatory German course issued by the University's admissions office (“Bewerbung  - Zulassung  - Einschreibung”). Students register for the German course by paying the entrance level course fees plus the placement test fee, to the university's bank account as given in the letter of admission. Students have to register before the registration deadline as stated in the letter of admission. After the payment and the subsequent confirmation by the university, the registration is binding.

Contrary to what is stated above, you can register for the three-week TestDaF training courses without an admission to the University of Stuttgart, provided place is still available. The training courses are not offered currently.

If the number of registrations exceeds the number of places available in the course, further registrations may be declined even before the end of the registration deadline. In this case, the fees paid for registration will be refunded in full.

1. Anmeldung und Voraussetzungen

Voraussetzung für die Anmeldung ist die Zulassung bzw. Vormerkung  zum studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurs der Universität Stuttgart durch die Abteilung Bewerbung  - Zulassung  - Einschreibung. Die Anmeldung erfolgt durch Zahlung der Gebühr der Eingangsstufe (einer Sicherheit nach § 19 Abs. 1 LGebG) zuzüglich der Gebühr für den Einstufungstest in Höhe von EUR 50 (§ 3 Abs. 1 und § 4 Satz 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerbende) auf das in der Vormerkung zum Deutschkurs genannte Konto der Universität Stuttgart. Die Zahlung muss vor dem Ende der in der Vormerkung genannten Anmeldefrist erfolgen. Mit dem Eingang dieser Gebührenzahlung ist die Anmeldung verbindlich, und es erfolgt eine Bestätigung der Anmeldung und Gebührenzahlung per E-Mail.

Abweichend von Satz 1 können in die dreiwöchigen TestDaF-Trainingskurse auch externe Teilnehmende ohne Zulassung zum Studium an der Universität Stuttgart aufgenommen werden (§ 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Diese Trainingskurse werden derzeit nicht angeboten.

Wenn die Zahl der Anmeldungen die Zahl der Plätze im Kurs übersteigt, können weitere Anmeldungen auch bereits vor Ende der Anmeldefrist abgelehnt werden (§ 1 Satz 3 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). In diesem Fall werden sowohl die Kursgebühr als auch die Einstufungstestgebühr in voller Höhe zurückgezahlt.

2. Course Fees

Application is for one semester. The admission and registration is valid for the full semester that the student has applied for and students are enrolled for the full semester as well. Therefore, payment obligations comprise the fees for one full semester.

The fees covering one semester comprise: (1) the placement test fees, (2) the entrance level fees (i.e. the first 9 weeks of the semester) and (3) the subsequent level fees (i.e. the last 9 weeks of the semester). The placement test fees are EUR 50, the course fees are calculated according to the number of teaching units and EUR 5 for each unit.

Payment is done in two instalments: The placement fees (1) and entrance level fees (2) are due at course registration after admission. Payment of the subsequent level fees is due after the start of the course and before the start of the subsequent level.

After course registration and payment of the fees, students of the preparatory German course are enrolled as full students of Stuttgart University if all other requirements are fulfilled.

2. Kursgebühr

Die Bewerbung erfolgt für ein Semester. Die Zulassung bzw. Vormerkung sowie die Anmeldung gilt ebenfalls für das gesamte Semester, für das die Bewerbung erfolgt ist, und die Teilnehmer des Kurses werden für das betreffende Semester eingeschrieben. Daher besteht auch die Zahlungsverpflichtung für die Gesamtgebühr eines Semesters.

Die Gesamtgebühr im Semester besteht aus: (1) der Einstufungstestgebühr, (2) der Kursgebühr der Einstiegsstufe (d.h. der ersten 9 Wochen des Semesters) sowie (3) der Anschlussstufe (d.h. der letzten 9 Wochen des Semesters). Die Einstufungstestgebühr beträgt EU 50 und die Kursgebühren ergeben sich aus dem Unterrichtsumfang in Unterrichtseinheiten à EUR 5 pro Unterrichtseiheit (§ 3 Abs. 2 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen).

Die Zahlung erfolgt in zwei Raten: Die Einstufungsgebühr (1) und die Gebühr der Einstiegsstufe (2) sind beide bei der Anmeldung zum Kurs nach erfolgter Zulassung/Vormerkung fällig und die Kursgebühr der Anschlussstufe (3) nach Kursbeginn und vor Beginn der Anschlussstufe.

Nach Anmeldung unter Zahlung der Einstufungsgebühr und der Kursgebühr der Einstiegsstufe werden die Teilnehmer*innen des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses als Studierende der Universität Stuttgart zum Deutschstudium eingeschrieben, wenn alle anderen Voraussetzungen für die Einschreibung erfüllt sind.

3. Cancellation and refund of registration fees and course fees

Course registration by payment of the entrance level fees and the placement test fees is binding: If you de-register, refund of the fees is only possible if you cannot attend the course due to illness as proven by a medical certificate or if your visa application is rejected after you applied in time and correctly. The placement test fee will not be refunded.

After you paid the complete course fee in the first week after classes started, you will be refunded the course fees in case you wish to de-register only for reasons you cannot be hold accountable for (e.g. if you cannot attend the course due to an illness). In this case you will be refunded the course fees for the part of the course you are not able to attend due to your illness.

The refund of the course fees must be applied for during the semester in question. After the end of the semester, refund of the course fees is not possible any more. It is not possible to transfer fees into the following semester.

After de-registration, students cannot be enrolled as students of Stuttgart University any more.

3. Rücktritt und Erstattung der Gebühren

Die Anmeldung unter Zahlung der Gebühr der Eingangsstufe und Einstufungstestgebühr ist verbindlich. Rücktritt und Erstattung der gezahlten Kursgebühr ist nur möglich bei nachgewiesener krankheitsbedingter Verhinderung des Kursbesuchs oder nach Ablehnung des Visumsantrags, wenn rechtzeitige und korrekte Antragsstellung nachgewiesen wird, ggf. auch aus anderen nachgewiesenen Gründen, die der Bewerber nicht zu verantworten hat. Die Einstufungstestgebühr von EUR 50 wird auch in diesem Fall nicht zurückerstattet (§ 5 Satz 3 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Der Einbehalt der gezahlten Kursgebühr bei Abmeldung dient der Deckung der Kosten, die der Universität durch ihre Leistung der Bereitstellung von Kurslehrkräften in Abhängigkeit von den Anmeldungszahlen entstehen, vgl. § 7 Abs. 1 LGebG.

Auch bei Rücktritt während des Kurses ist eine Erstattung der Kursgebühr nur möglich im Falle von Gründen, welche der Teilnehmer bzw. die Teilnehmerin nicht zu verantworten haben (z.B. nachgewiesene krankheitsbedingte Verhinderung des weiteren Kursbesuchs). In diesem Fall erfolgt die Rückzahlung anteilig für den krankheitsbedingt nicht besuchten Teil des Kurses (§ 5 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen).

Die Erstattung der Gebühren muss innerhalb des Semesters beantragt werden, für das die Anmeldung erfolgt ist. Eine Erstattung der Gebühren nach Ende des Semesters, für das die Anmeldung erfolgt ist, ist nicht möglich. Eine Verschiebung der Gebühr in ein folgendes Semester ist nicht möglich.

Nach Rücktritt und Abmeldung vom Kurs ist eine Einschreibung zum Deutschstudium als Student*in der Universität Stuttgart nicht mehr möglich.

4. Placement test

The email that confirms course registration also invites the student to the compulsory placement test at the start of the course. Students are placed in the different course levels according to their results in the placement test. For the placement of a student on a certain level, the university can ask for certificates that prove that the immediately previous level has already been finished successfully. The university is not obliged to take into account any German language course certificates issued by other institutions. Especially, certificates showing that a level was finished with less than 70% of the avialable score will not be accepted.

Every semester the following levels are offered: (I) A2 level plus subsequent level B1 (18 weeks), (II) B1 level plus subsequent level B2 (18 weeks), (III) B2 level plus subsequent level C1 (18 weeks) and (IV) C1 level (9 weeks).

If students have already attended the preparatory German course offered by the University of Stuttgart in the previous semester, the decision is based on the final exam of the previous course level: If they pass the exam, they proceed onto the next course level, in case of failing they have to repeat the previous course level. In case no final exam is conducted, transition to the next course level depends on regular attendance, i.e. rate of absence of less than 10 %.

If students attended a previous course and did not continue it for one semester or more, a placement test can be done again and its result can be taken into account.

4. Einstufung

Zusammen mit der Bestätigung der Kursanmeldung erfolgt die Einladung zum obligatorischen Einstufungstest, der vor dem Unterrichtsbeginn stattfindet. Die Zuweisung zu einer Kursstufe erfolgt aufgrund des Ergebnisses des Einstufungstests (§ 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Für die Einstufung in eine Kursstufe aufgrund des Einstufungstestergebnisses kann der Nachweis des erfolgreichen Abschlusses der vorhergehenden Kursstufe verlangt werden. Ein Anspruch auf Anerkennung von Zeugnissen bisheriger Kursbesuche an anderen Institutionen besteht nicht. Insbesondere werden i.d.R. Zeugnisse nicht anerkannt, die nicht mit mindestens “befriedigend” (d.h. mindestens 70% der erreichbaren Punktzahl) abgeschlossen wurden.

In jedem Semester werden angeboten: (I) Die Kursstufe A2 mit Anschlussstufe B1 (18 Wochen Kursdauer), (II) die Kursstufe B1 mit Anschlussstufe B2 (18 Wochen Kursdauer), (III) die Kursstufe B2 mit Anschlussstufe C1 (18 Wochen Kursdauer) und (IV) die Kursstufe C1 (9 Wochen Kursdauer). 

Im Falle der Fortführung des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses der Universität Stuttgart nach vorherigem Besuch einer Kursstufe des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses entscheidet das Ergebnis der Abschlussprüfung der vorhergehenden Kursstufe: Bei Bestehen erfolgt die Einstufung in die nächsthöhere Kursstufe, bei Nichtbestehen muss die vorher besuchte Kursstufe wiederholt werden. Wenn keine Abschlussprüfung durchgeführt wird, ist die Fortsetzung auf der nächsten Kursstufe an vorherige regelmäßige Teilnahme gebunden, d.h. unentschuldigte Fehlzeiten von nicht mehr als 10 %.

Wenn zwischen dem vorherigen Kursbesuch und der Fortsetzung des Deutschkurses der Kurs ein Semester oder mehr nicht besucht wurde, kann eine erneute Einstufung durchgeführt werden und die Zuweisung zu einer Kursstufe aufgrund des Ergebnisses dieser Einstufung erfolgen. Als Nicht-Besuch des Kurses in diesem Sinne gilt auch, wenn im vorherigen Kurs unentschuldigte Fehlzeiten von über 10 % vorliegen.

5. Certificates and duplicates

Any kind of certification requires that students attend the course regularly. At the end of each course level, every student is given a certificate of performance (Zeugnis) that states the results of the final exam and the number of teaching units (Unterrichtseinheiten). If a student attended the course regularly without taking the final examination or if no final exam is conducted, students are given a certificate of attendance (Teilnahmebescheinigung) which states the number of teaching units. In order to be given any certificate, students are required not to miss more than 10 % of their classes. Attendance and absence is documented on the attendance lists as kept by the teachers. Duplicates of certificates can be issued within 5 years after the attended course. Such duplicates are subject to a charge of EUR 25. More than 5 years after the attended course, certificates or duplicates cannot be issued any more.

5. Zeugnisse, Bescheinigungen, Zweitausfertigungen

Es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht. Am Ende jeder Kursstufe erhält jeder Teilnehmer bzw. jede Teilnehmerin ein Zeugnis, das das Abschlussprüfungsergebnis sowie die besuchten Unterrichtseinheiten ausweist. Wenn der Kurs regelmäßig besucht, aber die Abschlussprüfung nicht absolviert wurde oder keine Abschlussprüfung stattfand, wird eine Teilnahmebescheinigung ausgestellt. Um ein Zeugnis oder eine Teilnahmebescheinigung zu erhalten, dürfen die TeilnehmerInnen nicht mehr als 10 Prozent der Unterrichtszeit der entsprechenden Kursstufe unentschuldigt versäumt haben. Als Nachweis dienen die von den Lehrkräften täglich geführten Anwesenheitslisten. Zweitausfertigungen von Zeugnissen oder Teilnahmebescheinigungen können innerhalb von 5 Jahren nach Kursbesuch ausgestellt werden. Für diese Zweitausfertigungen wird eine Gebühr von EUR 25 erhoben (Anlage zu § 1, lfd. Nr. 11 Allgemeine Gebührensatzung der Universität Stuttgart). Nach Ablauf der 5jährigen Aufbewahrungsfrist können keine Teilnahmebescheinigungen oder Zeugnisse mehr ausgestellt werden.

First of all: Apply for admission

Please apply for admission to the preparatory German course of the University of Stuttgart via the online portal C@mpus. Apply from October 15 through December 15, 2026. If your application was successful, you will be sent a "Vormerkung" (non-binding admission) in December or early January.

In your "Vormerkung" for summer semester 2027, we will inform you how to register for the preparatory German course and what fees are required. You will register for the course by paying the fees of your entrance level and the the placement test fees. The "Vormerkung" will state how much you will have to pay as well as the university's bank details.

Register by paying the entrance level fees and the placement test fees

After receiving the "Vormerkung" for the preparatory German language course, please transfer the entrance level fees + placement test fees by January 15, 2027 to the university's bank account as stated in the "Vormerkung" in order to register for the German course. This payment is your binding registration for the German course.

Please note: You first have to apply for admission to the preparatory German course of the University of Stuttgart and you have to have got a "Vormerkung". Without a "Vormerkung" for the preparatory German course for the summer semester 2027, we will not admit you into the German course even if you pay any fees to the university's bank account.

What do I have to pay later?

Your registration by payment of the fees of the entrance level and our subsequent confirmation of your registration to the German course guarantee you a place in the preparatory German course (you may need this confirmation e.g. for your visa). The registration is binding. After the start of the course, we will ask you to pay the fees of your second or subsequent course level. In this way, the fees for the entire semester are paid in two installments: By January 15 for your entrance level registration, and by May 15 for the subsequent course level. If you are placed into the C1 level, there is no subsequent course level and thus no second installment.

Our confirmation of your course registration

As soon as your payment has been credited to the university's account, we will send you an email. It may take a few days until your payment appears on the university's account and only after that we will be able to send you the email. As long as place is still available in the course, we will confirm to you in this email that you have been registered to the university's preparatory German language course and invite you to the placement test. This confirmation guarantees your place in the course. You may need this confirmation for your visa application.

If you have paid to register but haven't received from us any confirmation of your registration for 7 days, please check if you gave us the correct email address (and check your spam folder). We will send our confirmation to the address you gave us when you applied. If you are sure you haven't received our confirmation for more than 7 days after your payment, please send an email and send us your transfer receipt.

As long as we offer an online course because students cannot obtain their visa on time (usually for the first two weeks), a delayed issue of your visa is not a reason for refunding the fees if you de-register. If however you have not yet received your visa 2 weeks after the course start or if your visa application is rejected, we will refund your fees after you proved to us that you applied on time and correctly. The 50 EUR placement test fee will not be refunded.

If you cannot join the course for reasons you cannot be held responsible for, please ask for a refund of the fees within the semester you have registered for. After the end of the semester, the fees you paid cannot be refunded any more.

What next?

Once you have registered for the course and received our confirmation of your course registration, please wait a little: We will contact you approximately one week after the January 15 registration deadline to inform you about the next steps, including details regarding the placement test.

If you need a visa: Please apply for your visa immediately after registering. For your visa application, you will need our confirmation of your registration, fee payment, and admission.

Placement test

The decision on your entrance level in the course (A2, B1, B2 or C1) will be based on your result in the placement test (onSET) that you have to take before the start of the course. We will invite you to the placement test in our confirmation of your course registration.

The placement test will take place in March 2027. After the registration deadline, we will inform all registered students about the exact dates and procedures. The test is conducted entirely online, meaning you do not need to be in Stuttgart to take it and you can do it at home. For the placement test, you will need a computer with microphone and camera and reliable internet connection.

Please check this website regularly for any changes regarding time and form (online or classroom) of the placement test.

We are looking forward to meeting you in our German course in April!

If students get their visa too late and cannot be in Stuttgart for the course start, we can offer the course online for the first 2 weeks until the students are able to come to Stuttgart.

If students are rejected their visa or if they have not yet received their visa two weeks after the course start, they can de-register from the course and will be refunded the fees they paid minus EUR 50 after proving that they had applied for their visa on time.

In summer semester 2027, classes will be given in classroom teaching with single online days ('hybrid learning').

If students do not get their visa on time and cannot be in Stuttgart for the course start, we can offer the course for the first 2 weeks completely online until the students can come to Stuttgart.

You will finish two levels within one semester: your entrance level (A2, B1, B2 or C1) that we will determine in the placement test and your subsequent level, the level above your entrance level. If you join the course on entrance level C1, there is no connecting level after it.

You will pay the entrance level fees (EUR 1055,-) when you register for the course. You will pay the subsequent level fees (EUR 1080,-) while attending the entrance level.

While you are attending the subsequent level, we will invite you to register for continuing the course in the following semester.

Once you have registered for the entrance level, you do not have to apply again for the subsequent level or the following semester.

After your admission ("Vormerkung") and registration, we guarantee you a place in the course. We will determine your entrance level (A2, B1, B2, or C1) in the placement test that will be conducted a few weeks before the course starts. The placement test consists of a written part and an oral part and will be completely online. Therefore, you do not have to be in Germany for the placement test. Of course, we will consider for the placement decision also any certificates you have got.

1. Registration and prerequisites

Students can register for the preparatory German language course only after having received an admission (“Vormerkung”)  to the preparatory German course issued by the University's admissions office (“Bewerbung  - Zulassung  - Einschreibung”). Students register for the German course by paying the entrance level course fees plus the placement test fee, to the university's bank account as given in the letter of admission. Students have to register before the registration deadline as stated in the letter of admission. After the payment and the subsequent confirmation by the university, the registration is binding.

Contrary to what is stated above, you can register for the three-week TestDaF training courses without an admission to the University of Stuttgart, provided place is still available. The training courses are not offered currently.

If the number of registrations exceeds the number of places available in the course, further registrations may be declined even before the end of the registration deadline. In this case, the fees paid for registration will be refunded in full.

1. Anmeldung und Voraussetzungen

Voraussetzung für die Anmeldung ist die Zulassung bzw. Vormerkung  zum studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurs der Universität Stuttgart durch die Abteilung Bewerbung  - Zulassung  - Einschreibung. Die Anmeldung erfolgt durch Zahlung der Gebühr der Eingangsstufe (einer Sicherheit nach § 19 Abs. 1 LGebG) zuzüglich der Gebühr für den Einstufungstest in Höhe von EUR 50 (§ 3 Abs. 1 und § 4 Satz 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerbende) auf das in der Vormerkung zum Deutschkurs genannte Konto der Universität Stuttgart. Die Zahlung muss vor dem Ende der in der Vormerkung genannten Anmeldefrist erfolgen. Mit dem Eingang dieser Gebührenzahlung ist die Anmeldung verbindlich, und es erfolgt eine Bestätigung der Anmeldung und Gebührenzahlung per E-Mail.

Abweichend von Satz 1 können in die dreiwöchigen TestDaF-Trainingskurse auch externe Teilnehmende ohne Zulassung zum Studium an der Universität Stuttgart aufgenommen werden (§ 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Diese Trainingskurse werden derzeit nicht angeboten.

Wenn die Zahl der Anmeldungen die Zahl der Plätze im Kurs übersteigt, können weitere Anmeldungen auch bereits vor Ende der Anmeldefrist abgelehnt werden (§ 1 Satz 3 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). In diesem Fall werden sowohl die Kursgebühr als auch die Einstufungstestgebühr in voller Höhe zurückgezahlt.

2. Course Fees

Application is for one semester. The admission and registration is valid for the full semester that the student has applied for and students are enrolled for the full semester as well. Therefore, payment obligations comprise the fees for one full semester.

The fees covering one semester comprise: (1) the placement test fees, (2) the entrance level fees (i.e. the first 9 weeks of the semester) and (3) the subsequent level fees (i.e. the last 9 weeks of the semester). The placement test fees are EUR 50, the course fees are calculated according to the number of teaching units and EUR 5 for each unit.

Payment is done in two instalments: The placement fees (1) and entrance level fees (2) are due at course registration after admission. Payment of the subsequent level fees is due after the start of the course and before the start of the subsequent level.

After course registration and payment of the fees, students of the preparatory German course are enrolled as full students of Stuttgart University if all other requirements are fulfilled.

2. Kursgebühr

Die Bewerbung erfolgt für ein Semester. Die Zulassung bzw. Vormerkung sowie die Anmeldung gilt ebenfalls für das gesamte Semester, für das die Bewerbung erfolgt ist, und die Teilnehmer des Kurses werden für das betreffende Semester eingeschrieben. Daher besteht auch die Zahlungsverpflichtung für die Gesamtgebühr eines Semesters.

Die Gesamtgebühr im Semester besteht aus: (1) der Einstufungstestgebühr, (2) der Kursgebühr der Einstiegsstufe (d.h. der ersten 9 Wochen des Semesters) sowie (3) der Anschlussstufe (d.h. der letzten 9 Wochen des Semesters). Die Einstufungstestgebühr beträgt EU 50 und die Kursgebühren ergeben sich aus dem Unterrichtsumfang in Unterrichtseinheiten à EUR 5 pro Unterrichtseiheit (§ 3 Abs. 2 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen).

Die Zahlung erfolgt in zwei Raten: Die Einstufungsgebühr (1) und die Gebühr der Einstiegsstufe (2) sind beide bei der Anmeldung zum Kurs nach erfolgter Zulassung/Vormerkung fällig und die Kursgebühr der Anschlussstufe (3) nach Kursbeginn und vor Beginn der Anschlussstufe.

Nach Anmeldung unter Zahlung der Einstufungsgebühr und der Kursgebühr der Einstiegsstufe werden die Teilnehmer*innen des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses als Studierende der Universität Stuttgart zum Deutschstudium eingeschrieben, wenn alle anderen Voraussetzungen für die Einschreibung erfüllt sind.

3. Cancellation and refund of registration fees and course fees

Course registration by payment of the entrance level fees and the placement test fees is binding: If you de-register, refund of the fees is only possible if you cannot attend the course due to illness as proven by a medical certificate or if your visa application is rejected after you applied in time and correctly. The placement test fee will not be refunded.

After you paid the complete course fee in the first week after classes started, you will be refunded the course fees in case you wish to de-register only for reasons you cannot be hold accountable for (e.g. if you cannot attend the course due to an illness). In this case you will be refunded the course fees for the part of the course you are not able to attend due to your illness.

The refund of the course fees must be applied for during the semester in question. After the end of the semester, refund of the course fees is not possible any more. It is not possible to transfer fees into the following semester.

After de-registration, students cannot be enrolled as students of Stuttgart University any more.

3. Rücktritt und Erstattung der Gebühren

Die Anmeldung unter Zahlung der Gebühr der Eingangsstufe und Einstufungstestgebühr ist verbindlich. Rücktritt und Erstattung der gezahlten Kursgebühr ist nur möglich bei nachgewiesener krankheitsbedingter Verhinderung des Kursbesuchs oder nach Ablehnung des Visumsantrags, wenn rechtzeitige und korrekte Antragsstellung nachgewiesen wird, ggf. auch aus anderen nachgewiesenen Gründen, die der Bewerber nicht zu verantworten hat. Die Einstufungstestgebühr von EUR 50 wird auch in diesem Fall nicht zurückerstattet (§ 5 Satz 3 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Der Einbehalt der gezahlten Kursgebühr bei Abmeldung dient der Deckung der Kosten, die der Universität durch ihre Leistung der Bereitstellung von Kurslehrkräften in Abhängigkeit von den Anmeldungszahlen entstehen, vgl. § 7 Abs. 1 LGebG.

Auch bei Rücktritt während des Kurses ist eine Erstattung der Kursgebühr nur möglich im Falle von Gründen, welche der Teilnehmer bzw. die Teilnehmerin nicht zu verantworten haben (z.B. nachgewiesene krankheitsbedingte Verhinderung des weiteren Kursbesuchs). In diesem Fall erfolgt die Rückzahlung anteilig für den krankheitsbedingt nicht besuchten Teil des Kurses (§ 5 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen).

Die Erstattung der Gebühren muss innerhalb des Semesters beantragt werden, für das die Anmeldung erfolgt ist. Eine Erstattung der Gebühren nach Ende des Semesters, für das die Anmeldung erfolgt ist, ist nicht möglich. Eine Verschiebung der Gebühr in ein folgendes Semester ist nicht möglich.

Nach Rücktritt und Abmeldung vom Kurs ist eine Einschreibung zum Deutschstudium als Student*in der Universität Stuttgart nicht mehr möglich.

4. Placement test

The email that confirms course registration also invites the student to the compulsory placement test at the start of the course. Students are placed in the different course levels according to their results in the placement test. For the placement of a student on a certain level, the university can ask for certificates that prove that the immediately previous level has already been finished successfully. The university is not obliged to take into account any German language course certificates issued by other institutions. Especially, certificates showing that a level was finished with less than 70% of the avialable score will not be accepted.

Every semester the following levels are offered: (I) A2 level plus subsequent level B1 (18 weeks), (II) B1 level plus subsequent level B2 (18 weeks), (III) B2 level plus subsequent level C1 (18 weeks) and (IV) C1 level (9 weeks).

If students have already attended the preparatory German course offered by the University of Stuttgart in the previous semester, the decision is based on the final exam of the previous course level: If they pass the exam, they proceed onto the next course level, in case of failing they have to repeat the previous course level. In case no final exam is conducted, transition to the next course level depends on regular attendance, i.e. rate of absence of less than 10 %.

If students attended a previous course and did not continue it for one semester or more, a placement test can be done again and its result can be taken into account.

4. Einstufung

Zusammen mit der Bestätigung der Kursanmeldung erfolgt die Einladung zum obligatorischen Einstufungstest, der vor dem Unterrichtsbeginn stattfindet. Die Zuweisung zu einer Kursstufe erfolgt aufgrund des Ergebnisses des Einstufungstests (§ 1 Satzung der Universität Stuttgart über Gebühren für die Sprachkurse zur Vorbereitung auf den Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache für ausländische StudienbewerberInnen). Für die Einstufung in eine Kursstufe aufgrund des Einstufungstestergebnisses kann der Nachweis des erfolgreichen Abschlusses der vorhergehenden Kursstufe verlangt werden. Ein Anspruch auf Anerkennung von Zeugnissen bisheriger Kursbesuche an anderen Institutionen besteht nicht. Insbesondere werden i.d.R. Zeugnisse nicht anerkannt, die nicht mit mindestens “befriedigend” (d.h. mindestens 70% der erreichbaren Punktzahl) abgeschlossen wurden.

In jedem Semester werden angeboten: (I) Die Kursstufe A2 mit Anschlussstufe B1 (18 Wochen Kursdauer), (II) die Kursstufe B1 mit Anschlussstufe B2 (18 Wochen Kursdauer), (III) die Kursstufe B2 mit Anschlussstufe C1 (18 Wochen Kursdauer) und (IV) die Kursstufe C1 (9 Wochen Kursdauer). 

Im Falle der Fortführung des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses der Universität Stuttgart nach vorherigem Besuch einer Kursstufe des studienvorbereitenden Deutschkurses entscheidet das Ergebnis der Abschlussprüfung der vorhergehenden Kursstufe: Bei Bestehen erfolgt die Einstufung in die nächsthöhere Kursstufe, bei Nichtbestehen muss die vorher besuchte Kursstufe wiederholt werden. Wenn keine Abschlussprüfung durchgeführt wird, ist die Fortsetzung auf der nächsten Kursstufe an vorherige regelmäßige Teilnahme gebunden, d.h. unentschuldigte Fehlzeiten von nicht mehr als 10 %.

Wenn zwischen dem vorherigen Kursbesuch und der Fortsetzung des Deutschkurses der Kurs ein Semester oder mehr nicht besucht wurde, kann eine erneute Einstufung durchgeführt werden und die Zuweisung zu einer Kursstufe aufgrund des Ergebnisses dieser Einstufung erfolgen. Als Nicht-Besuch des Kurses in diesem Sinne gilt auch, wenn im vorherigen Kurs unentschuldigte Fehlzeiten von über 10 % vorliegen.

5. Certificates and duplicates

Any kind of certification requires that students attend the course regularly. At the end of each course level, every student is given a certificate of performance (Zeugnis) that states the results of the final exam and the number of teaching units (Unterrichtseinheiten). If a student attended the course regularly without taking the final examination or if no final exam is conducted, students are given a certificate of attendance (Teilnahmebescheinigung) which states the number of teaching units. In order to be given any certificate, students are required not to miss more than 10 % of their classes. Attendance and absence is documented on the attendance lists as kept by the teachers. Duplicates of certificates can be issued within 5 years after the attended course. Such duplicates are subject to a charge of EUR 25. More than 5 years after the attended course, certificates or duplicates cannot be issued any more.

5. Zeugnisse, Bescheinigungen, Zweitausfertigungen

Es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht. Am Ende jeder Kursstufe erhält jeder Teilnehmer bzw. jede Teilnehmerin ein Zeugnis, das das Abschlussprüfungsergebnis sowie die besuchten Unterrichtseinheiten ausweist. Wenn der Kurs regelmäßig besucht, aber die Abschlussprüfung nicht absolviert wurde oder keine Abschlussprüfung stattfand, wird eine Teilnahmebescheinigung ausgestellt. Um ein Zeugnis oder eine Teilnahmebescheinigung zu erhalten, dürfen die TeilnehmerInnen nicht mehr als 10 Prozent der Unterrichtszeit der entsprechenden Kursstufe unentschuldigt versäumt haben. Als Nachweis dienen die von den Lehrkräften täglich geführten Anwesenheitslisten. Zweitausfertigungen von Zeugnissen oder Teilnahmebescheinigungen können innerhalb von 5 Jahren nach Kursbesuch ausgestellt werden. Für diese Zweitausfertigungen wird eine Gebühr von EUR 25 erhoben (Anlage zu § 1, lfd. Nr. 11 Allgemeine Gebührensatzung der Universität Stuttgart). Nach Ablauf der 5jährigen Aufbewahrungsfrist können keine Teilnahmebescheinigungen oder Zeugnisse mehr ausgestellt werden.
