Application guideline

Subject combinations, selection processes, proof of language proficiency: it is all right there in our handbook – everything you need to know about applying for studies at the University of Stuttgart.

The application process for all prospective students takes place entirely online, meaning that you must upload all your documentation in the Campus-Management-System C@MPUS.

As an applicant, it is therefore important that you

  • have a valid e-mail address and an inbox that you regularly monitor for messages
  • have access to the Internet and a scanner for scanning in the documents that you need to upload for your application
  • log in regularly to the respective application portals to check the status of the application and of your to-do items

All application processes regardless of the applicant’s national origin run on the University of Stuttgart’s Campus-Management-System C@MPUS. A few undergraduate study programs (single-subject Bachelor’s with NC but without entrance examinations) take part in the Dialogue Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) [de]. This category of applicants must also register in the hochschulstart.de portal.

Before you start work on your application, we recommend that you read the admissions statutes closely and commit the application deadlines to memory.

Applicants from abroad (non-EU):
Applicants from non-EU countries/with non-EU citizenship and without German university entrance qualification apply via C@MPUS only and not DOSV. In addition special admission criteria that depend on which country you are from will apply.

German language proficiency:
Apart from international and English-language Master’s programs, German is the language of instruction at the University of Stuttgart. Therefore, a good knowledge of German is an absolute necessity. The University asks all applicants for proof that they have a working knowledge of German.

If you want to enter a study program that ends in a Bachelor of Arts (combination Bachelor’s or teaching qualification programs), you are required to study two subjects in various combinations. Here you will find what subjects are feasible combinations in the various study programs:

Explanation of degrees

Various final records or transcripts can qualify you for studying at the University of Stuttgart. Check here which final record you need and if you need to submit additional documentation.

If you are engaged in or about to start your voluntary service, it is recommended that you apply at the start of your service. If admitted at that time, you will get preferential admission during the next two admission periods ahead of all other applicants (also known as pre-selection). However, if in the interim an admissions test is instituted or modified, you will have to take it as part of the process. Please review the exact rules and procedure here.

If you already have an undergraduate degree and apply for a restricted-entry undergraduate study program, the study places are allocated in a quota framework for second degree applicants. You must submit a justification in writing for the second degree with your application. Your justification will then be evaluated by a committee of professors before being entered together with the final record from your first degree studies in the selection process. Please note, that in this case you are only allowed to apply for one study program and that you might have to pay tuition fees.

If you graduated from a college of cooperative education before 1 March 2009, it qualifies as training and not as a first degree as defined in the Higher Education Admissions Act.

Entrance examination, higher education admissions process and NC in Bachelor’s and Master’s programs

In a few study programs, you must take an entrance examination. In addition, many study programs at the University of Stuttgart are subject to restricted admissions, also known as numerus clausus (NC). Please review the information on this special admission process.

You can get information on all restricted admissions and entrance examinations from the individual study program thumbnail descriptions.

To be admitted to the sports science study programs (teaching qualification B.A. and additional subject M.Ed.), you must evidence a sports admissions test (or waiver thereof). Please heed the application deadlines (15 May) and the instruction handout.

As provided by the State Higher Education Act, all prospective students for a Bachelor’s study program must participate in a studies orientation process and upload it during the enrollment. It is left to the universities how this orientation is to look in practice. The orientation processes listed on the following web page are accepted by the Univeristy of Stuttgart.

In general: Applicants for the teaching qualification study programs must arrange for a special orientation test (CCT). Applicants to all other study programs can choose from a variety of orientation processes. Students switching study programs have to provide evidence of an orientation process only if they apply for at least one subject in the 1st regular semester.

Studies in some subjects require specific language proficiency. Please see the thumbnail descriptions of the respective study programs for information on language requirements. Proof normally consists of a final record (Abiturzeugnis). Possible supplementary information required must be authorized by the chair of the examination committee for the relevant subject on a case by case basis.

If you must catch up subsequently on the required language proficiency, this timeframe can be extended by one or two semesters as provided for in the exam regulation and depending on the language to be learned. Please check further rules in the exam regulation for your subject or with Student Counseling Center.

Knowledge of the German language
The language of instruction at the University of Stuttgart is German, except in international or English-language Master’s programs. A good command of German is therefore essential for successful studies. The University requires proof of sufficient knowledge of German from all applicants.

Internships

Some Bachelor of Science study programs require pre-study internhips. The internship office of the respective study program provides information about the content and assistance for the choice of the pre-study internship. The internship office also carries out the recognition of the pre-study internship and issues the recognition certificate. The detailed rules for the pre-study internships are published in the internship guidelines and in the examination regulations, which you will find on the study program's websites.

If you

  • have not yet passed/completed your pre-study internship, or you have not yet received written confirmation that you have completed your pre-course internship, then enrollment to your chosen study program is based on the condition that you can meet these prerequisites and deliver proof to the internship office by the deadline stated in the relevant exam regulations. If you are unable to deliver proof that you have completed a pre-course internship by the deadline, then you must apply for a deadline extension at the internship office.
  • have completed your pre-study internship before your studies commence, and you have received written proof of this, please upload this written proof (not your internship report!) with your enrollment. If this is not possible, present your proof of completion to the internship office after you have enrolled.

Please note: Some pre-study internships can be completed and handed in later. But we nevertheless strongly recommend doing the internships during the time before you start your studies. Integrating an internship into studies within the required submission time limit is often more difficult than expected.

Further information and internship-offices:

In many study programs a portion of ECTS credits with respect to so-called key skills, which is a requisite part of every B.A. study program, can be earned through an internship. There are also individual study programs that prescribe a mandatory internship. The details are governed by the exam regulation for each major subject. Whether required or not, we generally recommend that you do internships.

All students in the humanities and social science subjects can turn for advice to Studium-Praktikum-Beruf for all questions related to internships.
