OBW Summer Research Program

The Ontario/Baden-Württemberg program offers research experiences at the University of Stuttgart in practically all engineering programs of the participating Ontario universities.

The OBW Summer Research Program is exclusively designed for students from universities located in the province of Ontario, Canada. The research program aims for academic internationalization through the exchange of scientific information. Participating Ontario students gain intercultural insights during their research abroad and experience a different student culture.

Prerequisites:

  • You must be nominated by your home university
  • You need to find a supervising host professor at the University of Stuttgart
  • German skills are not required for this program

The Ontario/Baden-Württemberg Summer Research Program is open to Ontario graduate and undergraduate students in science, engineering, and health science disciplines. If your application is successful you will spend either two or three summer months at the University of Stuttgart in Baden-Wuerttemberg (southwest Germany). You will work on research projects related to your studies at your respective Ontario home university.

In case you are an undergraduate student you have to be in the second year of your studies at the time you apply for the program. As a graduate student you may apply at any stage in your studies.

For detailed information, please visit the OBW Summer Research Program website.

Visa

Students from Canada can enter Germany without a visa for stays of no more than 90 days. If your planned program of studies exceeds the 90 day maximum, you will have to obtain a residence permit as soon as you arrive in Stuttgart.

Housing

The International Office will try to arrange accommodation for you in a student dorm. However, this cannot be guaranteed since dorm rooms are very scarce in Stuttgart. Once your application for the program has been approved, we will email you information on how to apply online for student housing.

The allocation of dormitory rooms is organized by the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart (organization managing the dormitories).  We do not have any influence concerning the location or the exact rent category of the allocated rooms. The rent varies from EUR 300 to EUR 400 per month. Please note: Once you have been approved, you will need to place an advance deposit to guarantee your room reservation.

Health insurance

OBW students take out a health insurance in Ontario (Educare 24) which covers the cost of medical treatment in Germany. For further questions please consult your program coordinator in Ontario.

Pick-up service

Our international buddy program ready.study.stuttgart offers a pick-up service exclusively for international exchange students visiting from our partner universities. Our buddies will meet you at the airport or at the main station and accompany you to your accommodation.
