Chancellor signs accession to the alliance

The University of Stuttgart is the new alliance partner of the state initiative “Women in MINT careers in business, science and research“. Dr. Bettina Buhlmann, Chancellor of the University, signed the accession to the alliance on 17 th July 2014 in the framework of the annual balance sheet discussions by the initiative in the Stuttgart “Haus der Wirtschaft”. The aim of the alliance for women in MINT careers is to substantially increase equal opportunities and the workforce potential in all MINT study and training occupations through an enhanced introduction, training and labour force participation of girls and women in MINT.

When signing the accession to the alliance, the Chancellor emphasised that the University of Stuttgart is strongly committed to attracting junior female talent. For years the University has already had an overall concept to motivate female pupils for MINT courses of study and to support junior female students and scientists. Measures were also being strategically implemented to strengthen the reconciliation between studying, training and occupation with family obligations. “ We share the targets of the alliance for women in MINT careers and are therefore particularly pleased that we have been invited to the joining ceremony“; said Dr. Buhlmann. “Together with the alliance partners we want to contribute towards enhancing the attractiveness of MINT careers for girls and women and attracting, training, scientifically qualifying and retaining more junior female talents,“ was how the Chancellor expressed it.

The University of Stuttgart is currently working on implementing the “audit family-friendly university“ and is intensifying its measures in the field of family-friendliness. Only a few weeks ago it joined the “Family Charter in the University“. There are also plans to build its own day care centre on the Vaihingen Campus with a specific educational concept to promote an early childhood MINT career.

With the state initiative “Women in MINT careers in business, science and research” the state government Baden-Württemberg wishes to promote junior female talent in the scientific and technical field in a targeted way and attract more women to embark on MINT careers with a broad alliance comprising approx. 40 partners from ministries, employers’ organisations, trade unions, employment agencies, female networks, universities and other cooperation partners. In addition, the state initiative is being actively supported by numerous companies from Baden-Württemberg.
