In the run-up to the new urban development ideas competition for the redesign of the Rosenstein Quarter, the Info-Laden Rosenstein e.V. is hosting an exhibition of student work exploring opportunities for urban development both inside and surrounding Stuttgart’s Nordbahnhof. The work was produced in summer 2017 at the University of Stuttgart.

Guiding concepts such as “urban quality” and “productive city” broach the issue of new ways of combining living and working. They sketch out a rediscovery of the city as a mixed eclectic and networked living space that is part of a varied urban society. Industry 4.0 has resulted in a shift in the boundaries between typology in architecture and open space, and the clean and efficient production processes and value creation chains bring about new synergies with city living. But which image of the city, and which everyday spaces promote innovation and make the city more productive? What role does a lively and attractive environment play in this and how can novel company concepts influence the future identity of city quarters?

Students at the University of Stuttgart have been exploring these issues using one of Stuttgart’s last prime inner-city premises – the area surrounding the Wagenhalle in the Stuttgart Nord quarter. The area surrounding Stuttgart’s Nordbahnhof has been the subject of much discussion, largely as the result of the planning phase of the large railway project Stuttgart 21 and offers, due to its ambiguousness, ambivalence and variety, a wealth of opportunities for developing a new interpretation of the city quarter. This required students to work at the interface between architecture and urban planning.

This private viewing will take place on 26.01.2018 at 6.00pm in the Info-Laden premises.
