Lucio Blandini, Werner Sobek Stuttgart AG:
Planning and building in the digital age

The building industry is being increasingly influenced by the exponential increase in computing power of modern computers and the rapid development of a range of digital planning tools. The consequences of this development encompass everything from planning, to execution, to building operation, and – as a final consequence – demolition. On the one hand, this development permits more (geometric) freedom in terms of the design; while on the other hand the increased use of BIM leads to an integral modeling approach that demands very close cooperation between the client, the various planning teams and the construction company. This makes projects more complex and also results in an increased volume of data, which makes it of paramount importance that the engineers involved always have an overview of the project and the control over the entire planning process. How this can be achieved and with which digital tools will be demonstrated based on various projects from the last ten years.
