Rainer Bayreuther: What does water sound like?

In our sonosphere we are able to intuitively recognize the sound of water. But water is rarely alone in bringing the air oscillations to our ears. It might be flowing through a metal pipe hidden behind plaster, running along a stony riverbed, splashing on the glass shower door, on the asphalt or on a field. Different movement dynamics, such as a spray, a stream or a splash of water tell us something about the geometrical frame. When we hear water we also gather information about complex external conditions. The sound of water is aesthetic and highly informative.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Bayreuther teaches Musicology at the Landeszentrum Musik-Design-Performance at Trossingen University of Music.

This lecture is part of the lecture series “Water – Habitat, Haven, Resource”. The lecture series draws together aspects of our relationship with water and its importance in scientific research in diverse fields.

This event is organized by the International Center for Culture and Technology Research (IZKT) at the University of Stuttgart and the Stuttgart City Library. In cooperation with the Lindenmuseum Stuttgart, der Wilhelma Zoological-Botanical Garden in Stuttgart, the SES-Stadtentwässerung Stuttgart, the Verbraucherzentrale Baden-Württemberg e.V., the state initiative “Our Neckar” and the BMBF research project WECHSEL at the University of Stuttgart.
