Remote working: new guidelines come into effect on August 1, 2022

July 28, 2022

Remote working, i.e. either working from home or mobile working, will become an integral part of how work is organized at the University of Stuttgart. University management and the staff council have agreed on provisional regulations governing this. These will form the basis of a participatory process that aims to find a sustainable solution.

Remote working will become an essential element of work organization at the University of Stuttgart. University management and the staff council are committed to implementing this transformational process. A provisional regulation governing remote working will come into effect on Monday, August 1, 2022. Over time, these new regulations will be supplemented with responses to questions frequently asked by university members (FAQs).

Extension of the service agreement until February 28, 2025

The regulation governing remote working (OrtsUA) was extended until February 28, 2025 (unchanged in content). Discussions on a final service agreement will take place in the second half of 2024 between the university management and the Staff Council.

The provisional regulation applies until December 31, 2023

"The new regulation for remote working is another steppingstone on the road to fulfilling the University of Stuttgart's strategic goal of being an attractive and reliable employer," says Professor Wolfram Ressel, Rector at the University of Stuttgart. It will initially apply until December 31, 2023.

"We have generally had positive experiences of working from home during the Corona pandemic. And our employee survey clearly showed the desire for flexible work organization," says Chancellor Jan Gerken. That's why university management and the staff council have come together to create a basis for this. "The new regulation enables a flexible, remote working model. In this way, we are improving the compatibility of employees' professional and private interests," says Ulrich Gemkow, Chairman of the Staff Council.

Details of new remote working regulations

Working from home is working within one's own four walls, mobile working means that you can work at locations other than the university. The term remote working ("OrtsUA") covers both of these. The university aims to encourage this flexible work form, it is an offer for employees. University management and the staff council emphasize that remote working must always be agreed in consultation with your supervisor. Telecommuting options remain in place.

This new regulation marks the beginning of a transformational phase, where employees will be involved in the process of reaching a long-term agreement. Overall, this process will aid the further development of work organization at the University of Stuttgart, taking into account the wide range of operational fields and both official and personal factors. Support services such as training courses, information, and feedback measures, will also be part of this process. Chancellor Gerken announced, "The regulations pertaining to remote working mark the beginning of a process that will see work organization at the University of Stuttgart undergo a transformation. This project will involve all interested parties, the staff council and possibly with external support.”
