Prof. Sibylle Baumbach is the new president of the German Shakespeare Society

Prof. Sibylle Baumbach, Head of Department of English Literatures and Cultures, Institute for Literary Studies of the University of Stuttgart is the new president of the German Shakespeare Society. "Shakespeare's influence on our literature and culture is immense, and even after some 400 years his works have not lost their relevance. In the theater, at school, at university, in the broader public - Shakespeare cannot be missing. In this sense, I am very much looking forward to my new tasks," says Prof. Baumbach. She was elected during the spring conference of the society in Weimar last Sunday and succeeds Prof. Claudia Olk.

Founded in Weimar in 1864, the Deutsche Shakespeare-Gesellschaft is one of the oldest literary societies in Europe. Among its 2000 members are experts in literary studies and theatre as well as teachers and literature fans. The society promotes the study of William Shakespeare's works in the German-speaking world, working closely with the fields of science, schools and artistic practice.
