History explores the past with scholarly methods and models; it primarily derives its insights from working with historical sources. The focus is on observing people as social beings understand the conditions and consequences of their thinking and acting in time and space.

The study program purposely avoids the tendency toward ever more specialized course content. At the University of Stuttgart, you can study history in its full thematic and chronological breadth: from antiquity through the Middle Ages to modern times and contemporary history.

Fundamentally, you should be highly interested in the subject and enjoy reading: history is above all studied by reading.

To study history means to set out on a search for Europe’s cultural roots. Of key importance is handling source materials from the various eras. Knowing foreign languages is a sine qua non, including Latin along with English, both of which can be acquired during your studies.

Prerequisites for successfully completing studies in history are an ability to think in terms of larger relationships, critical judgement ability, capability for conducting independent research and communicating academic content. Not only are these key qualifications for a subsequent career but at the same time also personality-building elements.
