Gender equality actors

To realize the gender equality mandate, a variety of players collaborate at the University of Stuttgart.

Area of responsibilities and tasks

Until 2020, responsibility for the area of equal opportunities and gender equality lay with the Rector of the University of Stuttgart; since then, the Vice Rectorate for Diversity, created in 2019, has also assumed responsibility for this area within the Rectorate. Together with the Gender Equality Officer, the Vice Rector for Diversity and Internationalization chairs the Senate Committee for Diversity and Equality.

Since 2006, the Rector of the University of Stuttgart has ultimate responsibility for equal opportunity and gender equality. Jointly with the Gender Equality Officer, the Rector chairs the Gender Advisory Committee with the Gender Equality Officer.

The Gender Equality Officer carries out her duties as a secondary function. She has three deputies in the University of Stuttgart and is elected for a two-year term by the Senate upon nomination by the Senate Committee on Diversity and Gender Equality. She acts in an advisory capacity in all bodies and is a voting member of the Senate. The Gender Equality Officer chairs the Senate Committee on Diversity and Gender Equality and jointly chairs the Gender Advisory Committee with the Rector.

Since October 2021, the Gender Equality Officer has been Dr. Grazia Lamanna.

The Gender Equality Office is an administrative department under the Chancellor and is functionally assigned to the Gender Equality Officer. It advises and supports students and scientific staff of the University of Stuttgart, supports the Gender Equality Officer substantively and operationally in implementing conceptual measures.

The University’s Equal Opportunity Officer [de] is responsible for ensuring equal opportunity and gender equality for non-academic employees.

The Gender Advisory Committee prepares strategic gender equality concepts and oversees their implementation. Its members include, in addition to the two chairpersons (the Rector and the Gender Equality Officer), the Chancellor, representatives from each research group and status group. In addition, there are subject matter experts. The Gender Equality Office handles administrative functions.

The Senate Committee for Diversity and Gender Equality is an advisory committee that fulfills the following roles in the area of gender equality: supporting the Vice Rector for Diversity and Internationalization, and the Gender Equality Officer; preparing gender equality policy proposals for the senate; proposing nominees for election as equal opportunity officers and their deputies.

The Senate Committee consists of two representatives from each status group. The committee is chaired by the Vice Rector for Early Career Researchers and Diversity and the Gender Equality Officer. The Gender Equality Office is responsible for managing the committee.

Dean are charged with working out faculty-specific goals relative to women’s share of all status and eligibility levels that are to be achieved by the respective faculty. They are also responsible for achieving these self-imposed targets and for gender reporting for their respective faculties.

Each faculty’s students and scientists elect a faculty gender equality representative for a two-year term to help implement equal opportunity and gender equality in the faculty. They cooperate with the university’s Gender Equality Officer. Jointly with the dean, they prepare the annual gender equality report. They support the faculty’s efforts to increase the proportion of women from among students up to and including professorships.
