Prof. Dr. Philip Beeley (University of Oxford)

For more than 350 years, perceptions of Thomas Harriot’s historic academic achievements have been largely based on the posthumous and deeply flawed publication Artis analyticae praxis, edited by his friend Walter Warner and published in 1631. But who was Warner, and how did he and other members of Harriot’s circle, such as Nathaniel Torporley and Robert Hues for example, contribute to a contemporary understanding of their former mentor? And to what extent did they influence Harriot’s cultural memory? Using previously unpublished materials, this lecture will offer insight into the almost heroic status that Harriot enjoyed in English academic circles in the early modern period.

Please note: this lecture will be held in English.

This lecture is part of the DIALOGO series, Stuttgart research group for the history of science and technology.
