The process of understanding is the basis of every successful communication. However, this does not exclude misunderstandings or alternative understandings. On the contrary, it is these various levels of understanding that make it possible for us to contemplate such processes and exploit the (productive) effect of ambiguity in language, literature and digital resources. Against the backdrop of the cluster initiative Verstehen verstehen: Sprache und Text (Understanding understanding: language and text), young academics from the universities of Stuttgart and Tübingen grapple with the challenges that literary texts and their contexts, digital possibilities and interdisciplinary collaborations pose to the processes of understanding.
