What exactly is money? What gives money its stability? How do digital payment methods work? Will we need cash in the future? Is there an alternative to our modern capitalist economic system? How do cryptocurrencies work and how sceptical should we be of them? This lecture will focus on these and other issues surrounding the topic of money, and the development of our monetary system from natural and commodity money to gold, modern coins and paper money.

This lecture will be delivered by Thomas Fehrmann, Professor of Economics, whose main field of research is monetary and economic policy. He teaches at Tsinghua University in Peking and at the Hochschule der Deutschen Bundesbank in Hachenburg, where he was employed as vice rector until 2014.
