Hannah Arendt’s report on the “Banality of Evil” is considered an authoritative text in France and Germany. However, Adolf Eichmann’s attempt to understand the administrative organization of the genocide of European Jews in this way is still a subject of much contentious debate even today. A seldom-considered aspect is the connection to a classic understanding of traditions of moral philosophy and political theory: the conscience as the source of the ability to differentiate between good and evil. If one analyses Arendt’s various references to the basic ideas of the “flexibility of conscience”, it is possible to shed new light on Arendt’s report the “Banality of Evil”.

This lecture will be held in German.

This event opens this year’s German-French Graduate Colloqium (link: http://www.izkt.de/index.php/cat/40/aid/981/title/Call%20for%20papers:%20Deutsch-franz%F6sisches%20Graduierten-Colloquium%202018 ) on the subject of “Hannah Arendt in France and Germany – new perspectives on her character, work and influence”.

This event is organized by the University of Stuttgart’s IZKT, sponsored by the Robert Bosch Foundation, with funds from the DVA Foundation.
