Ageing is a natural process that starts at birth and ends in death. Genetics are partially responsible for an individual’s experience of ageing. If everything “goes well”, biological structures renew themselves without any complications at the cellular level and people remain healthy. But whether one becomes more fragile with age and suffers from a decline in function or illness is not only down to fate; it is a complex interaction between environment and behavior. At the beginning it is the behavior of the parents that is important, whether they abuse alcohol or smoke, but then as age increases it is the where and how of everyday life that makes the ageing process easier or more difficult. Gerontology shows that physical activity has a direct impact on how we age.
