It is now 100 years since women gained the right to vote and be elected – an important milestone in the history of German democracy. But the path to women's suffrage was long and stony. In the mid-19th century, the main protagonists of various wings of the women's movement fought for equality and women’s right to participate in politics. The activists needed to convince a lot of people and this was made even more difficult by the fact that women were banned from joining political associations and organizing political gatherings. On November 12, 1918, the legal foundation for women's suffrage was finally laid. Two months later, on January 19, 1919, a vote was held at the constituent assembly – with women participating for the first time.

This exhibition presents biographical portraits of nine women who were committed to ensuring that women were given the right to vote.
