Varied program: For more than 20 years, the University of Stuttgart and the University of Hohenheim have offered joint Information Systems study programs. Now they are taking into account the current field of activity of business informatics specialists and are expanding their range of programs. Since fall 2022, prospective students have been able to choose between two Master’s study programs: In addition to Information Technology and Software Engineering, the University of Stuttgart emphasizes technically-oriented business administration and engineering subjects in its research-oriented study program. The University of Hohenheim focuses on the research and application-oriented management of the digital transformation as well as on artificial intelligence and offers a high level of practical orientation. In the coming winter semester, the University of Stuttgart will be starting the new B.Sc. program Information Systems, which combines information technology, software engineering, and business administration while offering many individual choices. The University of Hohenheim will introduce the B.Sc. program Information Systems for the 2024/25 winter semester. This year, the B.Sc. program Digital Business Management will lead the Master of Information Systems.
There’s a reason why Information Systems is one of the most popular study programs in Germany: In times of digitalization, graduates are more in demand than ever. The range of tasks performed by business IT specialists is also continuing to evolve as a result of technical, economic, and social change. This is reflected in the new range of programs offered by Stuttgart’s universities.
New Master’s program responds to changing times
The Master’s study programs launched last fall both contain the socio-technical core of information systems but have different emphases depending on the orientation of the respective university.
Students at the University of Stuttgart can expect the opportunity to plan their university studies in accordance with personal interests and career goals. There are now more than 120 modules to choose from. Specializations close to information technology (e.g., artificial intelligence or data analytics) are just as possible as technical specializations (e.g., in logistics or advanced manufacturing). “We impart not only up-to-date, interdisciplinary expertise but also sustainable, well-founded methodological, and research skills,” says Georg Herzwurm, Professor of Information Systems. “This is how we prepare our students for jobs in business or science.” At the University of Hohenheim, the focus is on topics such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0, agile software development, and data analytics. “Today, more than ever, companies need IT professionals who bring in-depth knowledge of information and communication systems for digital transformation,” says program director Prof. Dr. Mareike Schoop. “In Hohenheim, practical and research orientation go hand in hand.”
Overall, the degree programs at both universities result in a diverse, internationally oriented, modern, and attractive information systems Master’s program for more students. Instead of 25, there are now 50 study places available.
Attractive Bachelor’s degree programs prepare students for Master’s degrees
In the 2023/24 winter semester, the University of Stuttgart will launch the B.Sc. program Information Systems in its own right. Its unique selling point is the imparting of a broad and sustainable knowledge of methods and theory in all core subjects – including information technology – while offering a wide range of opportunities for personal orientation. It combines many specializations in information systems with individual emphasis in information technology, software engineering, and business administration. Among other things, the facets of information management, business intelligence and analytics, software-intensive business, and requirements and product management are examined in detail.
At the University of Hohenheim, the new B.Sc. program Information Systems will start in the 2024/25 winter semester. The unique selling point will be the range of courses in information systems and information technology specially tailored to this study program as well as the wide range of subjects in economics. A curriculum in Data Science will provide the opportunity to specialize in this direction. If you don’t want to wait until 2024, you can select the B.Sc. program Digital Business Management, which, with the appropriate module selection, will also lead to the M.Sc. Information Systems. This new and popular economics study program specializes in digital management with a foundation in business informatics as well as numerous individual specialization options.
Information for prospective students
Those who still find it difficult to decide on a study program can obtain more detailed information at the information events held by both universities.
On May 13, 2023, at the Vaihingen Campus, the University of Stuttgart will provide information about all Bachelor’s study programs at the Bachelor Application Day and will provide insights into its diverse research at the Science Day taking place at the same time. An info session on the Master’s study program in Information Systems will be held May 16, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. both face-to-face and online with program manager and faculty advisor Dr. Sixten Schockert. Registration is not required. Applications for the Bachelor’s and Master’s program in Information Systems are open until July 15, 2023.
At the University of Hohenheim, Master’s information events will be held on April 20 and May 11, 2023. The April date will include Information Systems with Program Manager Dr. Muhammed-Fatih Kaya. Application for the Master’s in Information Systems is possible until June 15, 2023. On May 12, 2023, the Bachelor Application Day will follow with information on all Bachelor’s degree programs as well as a tour of the most beautiful campus in Germany.
