Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design is a Master’s degree program offered by the University of Stuttgart in cooperation with Ain Shams University in Cairo. The Master’s degree program enables professional specialization in the field of international urban planning - an area of specialization that is becoming increasingly relevant due to the growing challenges posed by rapid urbanization processes and social and ecological upheavals worldwide.
IUSD aims to train a new generation of experts and decision-makers to develop holistic solutions to the ecological, cultural, and social problems of urban development.
Our students are trained to become all-rounders who know how to combine ideas from the engineering sciences with architectural, ecological, and socio-economic approaches: in terms of both sustainable design and the responsible use of the man-made environment.
Our students come from many different professional and cultural backgrounds. They learn to work on complex, practice-based case studies in interdisciplinary teams.
A first (undergraduate) degree is a prerequisite for the application. Professional experience in architecture and urban development is desirable. Young graduates and specialists from the fields of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, and regional planning can apply for the study program. Graduates of other bachelor’s degree programs and other interested persons can also apply, provided they have appropriate professional experience.
Prospective students should be interested in intercultural cooperation and in the development of holistic, interdisciplinary, collaborative, and innovative approaches to sustainable urban development.
As its name suggests, the uniqueness of the program lies in the shift of the learning focus from individual subjects, such as energy efficiency or ecology, to an integrated approach with a focus on sustainable design.
IUSD graduates work in the broad field of international urban planning - in development cooperation, for non-governmental organizations, in municipalities, at universities, and in private architecture and urban planning firms.
IUSD is a consecutive program and can be studied in direct subsequence to the Bachelor of Science study programs of University of Stuttgart. This includes architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, sociology, environmental protection technology, etc.
