Simulation Technology

Simulation Technology using computers makes it possible to find answers to questions safely, dependably, and economically that cannot be obtained using conventional experiments. For example:

  • How does a drug used to treat lung cancer disperse?
  • What happens in a combustion chamber at 1,200°C?
  • How does a space shuttle land?
  • How do pollutants flow underground?

In all these situations, simulations help to make dependable predictions under reproducible conditions

The great variety of applications extend from advances in medicine to the development of prototypes in vehicle manufacturing to planning flows to optimization of new environmental technologies.

The foundation for simulations is a broad basic background in mathematics, engineering sciences, computer science and natural sciences. From the third semester on – with the help of a personal mentor – an individualized lesson plan is devised that combines subjects that reflect the student’s own interests. In accompanying lectures, interdisciplinary principles and relationships are taught. Practical problems help to deepen interdisciplinary networking. In general many classes are strongly related to current research, thanks to the study program being affiliated with the Stuttgart Center for Simulation Science (SC SimTech).
