Exchange students from overseas (non-degree)

Our exchange program is an opportunity for students from overseas to spend up to two semesters in Germany. Find out whether this may be an option for you.

Are you an overseas student?

If the following criteria apply to you, then you are:

  • You are enrolled at a partner university of the University of Stuttgart in your home country.
  • You want to study for one or two semesters at the University of Stuttgart.
  • You can prove grades of C or above

Language requirements by the time of registration

Because most courses at the University of Stuttgart are taught in German, by the time you register we require you to demonstrate a minimum proficiency in the German language. Also in everyday life you get along much better with a German knowledge. To apply as an exchange student from overseas, you must fulfill one of the following language proficiency requirements:

  • German language level of C1
  • OR German language level of B2 or B1
    +
    participation in the intensive German course (mandatory); requires arrival in Stuttgart one month before semester start
  • (no intensive German course for level C1 in the summer semester, voluntary participation in level B2 instead)
  • OR German language level of A2
    +
    English language level of at least B1 (this regulation does not apply to native speakers of English)
    + participation in the intensive German course (mandatory); requires arrival in Stuttgart one month before semester start

Please note:
We can only accept a proof of language skills according to the classification scheme of the European Reference Frame (ERF). If necessary, please ask the language center of your home university to assign you to the equivalent language level using the ERF framework.

Application process

 The application procedure for exchange students from overseas consists of five steps:

Deadlines: April 1 (for the following winter semester), October 1 (for the following summer semester)

Please contact the International Office of your home university to complete this step before proceeding to Step 2.

Deadlines: May 1 (for the following winter semester), November 1 (for the following summer semester)

As soon as you have been nominated under Step 1, you will be provided with the link to the Mobility-Online portal. Please upload the following documents to the registration platform:

  • Proof of German language skills
  • Proof of English language skills
  • Passport sized photo

After registering online please have your study-abroad advisor at your home university email us the following application documents (pdf format):

  • Scan of your completed Mobility-Online registration form
  • Transcript of records from your home university either in English or in German, we require grades of C or above
  • Proof of German language skills
  • If necessary: proof of English language skills
  • If necessary: you can register for the intensive German course (IGC) on Mobility-Online as well

Deadlines: June 1 (for the following winter semester), December 1 (for the following summer semester)

After completing your registration on the Mobility-Online platform you can apply for admission as a non-degree program student via our web-based application system C@MPUS.

The C@MPUS portal will be open as of mid-May/mid-November.

To ensure a successful application process, we strongly recommend that you follow C@MPUS guideline.

Follow the instructions given and upload:

  • Application form for admission after first printing it out from the C@MPUS system and signing it
  • Transcript of records
  • Higher education entrance qualification

If your online application is completed correctly by the given deadline, you will be able to download your letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) on the C@MPUS platform. In case you need to apply for a student visa, please submit the letter of admission to the German consulate along with the other required documents.

Pre-departure information

Once you have downloaded your letter of admission, please read our Pre-departure information. It covers all the important information you need to get ready, including how to get health insurance, set up a bank account and enroll once you are here.
 

Please continue with the enrollment procedure after your arrival in Stuttgart via your C@MPUS applicant account. To make sure that your enrollment will be successful, be sure to follow our C@MPUS guideline.

Please remember that you will be asked to pay a semester fee at the time of enrollment. The bank details required for payment of fees will be found in your C@MPUS account.
