Field of Work

The research and teaching interests of Prof. Priewe fall within the general theme of cultural contacts, which he mainly explores from a literary perspective. The focus here is on North America, including the encounter of the Pilgrim Fathers with the Indian natives in the 17th and 18th century as well as the culture of Mexican immigrants and Latinos today.

Other areas of research include the history of medicine in the USA, popular music, postcolonial studies and transnational interrelations between North and South America.

Personal Information

Prof. Dr. Marc Priewe was born in Bückeburg/Lower Saxony in 1968 and has been professor of American studies and modern English literature at the Institute of Literary Studies, University of Stuttgart, since 2012. Having gained a degree in English studies/American studies and political science in Hanover he worked as a research assistant at the University of Potsdam, where he gained a doctorate in 2005 and habilitated in 2011. He has frequently spent periods of time teaching and researching in both German-speaking and English-speaking countries, for example at the University of California, Harvard University and University College London.
