In a sustainable renewable energy system, decentralized energy systems can make a valuable contribution to the stability of the system if they are intelligently controlled in a way that is beneficial to the system as a whole. That is why a test facility for intelligent decentralized energy systems is being planned on the campus at the University of Stuttgart – the Smart Energy Lab. This is intended to serve research projects focusing on innovative control algorithms and the interaction between decentralized structures and entire energy systems, making it possible to carry out future-oriented investigations on real systems – with real stakeholders.

Julia Kumm studied Econophysics at the University of Ulm. She is absolutely convinced that designing a successful concept for the coming energy revolution is one of the most relevant and exciting fields of work in the 21st century. For that reason, she decided to undertake her diploma thesis in the field of solar cell technology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE). And it was there that she completed her doctoral degree studies, for which she developed a patented procedure for the industrial metallization of highly efficient silicon solar cells. She is currently developing the research group ‘Intelligent Decentralized Energy Systems’ at the Institute of Energy Economics and Rational Energy Use, in collaboration with the Smart Energy Lab.
