The University of Stuttgart and the Australian Swinburne University of Technology plan to pool their expertise in the field of Advanced Manufacturing. The Rector of the University of Stuttgart, Prof. Wolfram Ressel, and the Vice Chancellor of Swinburne University, Prof. Aleksandar Subic, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Melbourne a few days ago.

At the core of the agreement is the factory of the future with the topics Advanced Manufacturing, Innovation in Production and Design, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic, and Industry 4.0. The planned activities will tie into the research campus ARENA2036 at University of Stuttgart. For example, an Industry 4.0 testing lab will be built in Swinburne as well. The agreement is also intended to allow both universities to initiate further research collaborations with partners in the industrial and political sectors.

“We are pleased to have found a leading, research-focused partner institution in Germany in the University of Stuttgart, who will contribute a great deal of special expertise in the natural and engineering sciences and technology, and outstanding know-how in the area of Industry 4.0,” says Vice Chancellor of Swinburne University, Prof. Aleksandar Subic.

In addition to the cooperation agreement on research and technology transfer, the partners also signed an agreement for a joint doctorate program that will allow doctoral candidates to conduct interdisciplinary research and also work on industry projects. The first doctoral student from the University of Stuttgart will be going to Australia as early as summer 2017.
