Kick-off event for Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075

July 3, 2019, Nr. 53

Data-integrated Simulation Science - a new paradigm

In order to mark the official start of the Cluster of Excellence, a kick-off had taken place on Thursday, 11th July 2019. The Speakers had been:

  • Prof. Wolfram Ressel, Rector of the University of Stuttgart
  • Dr. Matthias Beilein, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)
  • Dr. Justus Lentsch, The Ministry for Science, Research and Art of Baden-Wuerttemberg
  • Prof. Thomas Ertl, Director Stuttgart Center of Simulation Science, Spokesperson Cluster of Excellence EXC 2075
  • Prof. Michael Resch, Institute for High-Performance Computing
  • Prof. Marc-André Keip, Institute for Applied Mechanics (CE)
  • Prof. Andrea Barth, Institute for Applied Analysis and Numerical Solutions

Simulations have become an indispensable part of research and development in many different areas, and they make key contributions towards technological progress. Since 2007, the “Simulation Technology” (SimTech) Cluster of Excellence at the University of Stuttgart has advanced simulation science in great depth and breadth based on models, methods and computing aspects from an engineering perspective. The new Cluster of Excellence “Data-Integrated Simulation Science” targets a new class of modeling and computational methods based on all the data, which is currently available from various sources, in order to take the utility and precision of the simulations as well as the reliability of the decisions based upon them to a new level. The amount of data available today from sensor readings, data collections, experiments and simulations offers new and increasingly more significant opportunities to gain insights. However, methods purely based on data analysis are often difficult to understand and might not take physical principles into consideration. An in-depth understanding of complex systems can only be gained based on scientific principles. This is the reason why SimTech want to systematically integrate data extracted from various sources into the modelling-simulation-analysis cycle.
