Thomas Ertl honored with prestigious Visualization Career Award

During the IEEE VIS Conference 2019 in Vancouver, Prof. Thomas Ertl was honored for his outstanding work in the field of visualization research

Thomas Ertl, professor at the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems, director of the Visualization Research Center, spokesperson of the SimTech Cluster of Excellence, and principal investigator within the Collaborative Research Centers SFB 1313 and SFB-TRR 161, received the “2019 Visualization Career Award of the IEEE Technical Committee on Visualization and Graphics (VGTC)”.

During the opening session of the IEEE VIS Conference in Vancouver with more than 1000 attendees, he was honored for his seminal research in volume rendering, flow visualization, parallel and hardware accelerated graphics, large datasets, interactive steering, and visual analytics; and for leadership in developing and sustaining the visualization research community. He was also inducted to the newly founded VIS Academy. After having received the Technical Achievement Awards of Eurographics and IEEE VGTC in 2006 and the Distinguished Career Award of Eurographics Association in 2016, Thomas Ertl is now the only visualization researcher who was acknowledged for his research contributions and for his academic career on the European as well as on the international level.
