Bodo Rasch – Architecture for Allah.
Documentary film by Mouhcine El Ghomri, BR Deutschland 2004, 30 Min.,
Production: SÜDWEST Fernsehen, language: German and English, with subtitles

Introduction: Katharina Stolz, ifag
Guest speaker: Dr. Mahmoud Bodo Rasch

Even before he had completed his studies at the University of Stuttgart, the architect Bodo Rasch was employed by Frei Otto at the Institute of Lightweight Surface Structures and in his private architectural office “Atelier Frei Otto”. Rasch managed the construction for the first convertible umbrellas, developed in 1971 by Frei Otto for the Bundesgartenschau in Cologne. Building on this experience, Rasch, a practicing Muslim, and his company SL Rasch, built 250 convertible, high-tech Teflon umbrellas in 2009 and 2011 for the two million pilgrims who travel to Mecca and Medina annually, providing the pilgrims with protection from the searing dessert heat.

This event is organized by the Institute of Architectural History.
