Has the Enlightenment failed in its purpose? – is the question asked by author Karl-Heinz Ott in his book Verfluchte Neuzeit (2022). Protesters storm Congress. A Shaman triumphs in the Capitol. Just a few years ago, these events would have been unimaginable. But the rebellion against the Enlightenment has a long history, and this is by no means only taking place on the street. Its doctrines claim that it is not man himself but higher powers that determine his destiny. Western individualism is also a false doctrine, responsible for all the calamity in the world. In an essay remarkably rich in detail, Karl-Heinz Ott lays bare the intellectual foundations of these movements. And he shows that anti-modernism is as old as modernity. But reason can only prevail if it knows its opponents.
Karl-Heinz Ott, born in 1957 in Ehingen on the Danube, an author who lives near Freiburg, has received many awards for his work. His most recent publications are the novel Und jeden Morgen das Meer (2018) and Hölderlins Geister (2019).
