Up high in Basel and Hamburg
Martin Stumpf, Ingenieurbüro wh-p Ingenieure
The number of office and residential towers is increasing exponentially. In German-speaking regions, high-rises are also gaining in importance. Globally, more than 150 high-rises of more than 200m are completed annually. In German-speaking countries, high-rises of more than 150 to 200m are relatively rare, but the number is increasing.
As I the case with all large projects, innovative and successful projects can only be developed if all those involved in the planning phases cooperate and work together. Conceptional thinking and the communication of the concept at the various interfaces is of paramount importance. Digitalization is changing the planning process and it is making some aspects easier; but conceptional thinking nevertheless remains a fundamental skill even in the digital age. Using high-rise projects in Basel and Hamburg as examples, this lecture will shed light on the design, planning and construction of high-rises from a structural planning perspective.
