Social justice is something we all wish for. This term appears frequently at the top of the political agenda during electoral campaigns, usually formulated as a demand for “more justice”. But what does this phrase actually mean? If you take a closer look, you might realize that it is not as easy to define as it first appears. It becomes clear that this collective term has different meanings depending on the national context. Soziale Gerechtigkeit (social justice) and justice sociale  might appear to have identical meanings – but they are “false friends”. A German-French consideration of these terms not only helps to avoid misunderstandings, the comparison also provides additional insight into this complex topic.

Isabelle Bourgeois operates the dialogue platform www.tandem-europe.eu. From 1988 to 2017, she conducted research at the Centre d’Information et de recherche sur l’Allemagne contemporaine (CIRAC). She is an award-winning journalist and editor-in-chief for the magazine Regards sur l’économie allemande. The evening will be hosted by Prof. Dr. Henrik Uterwedde, who was once Deputy Director at the German-French Institute in Ludwigsburg (DFI) and an expert on the topic of France.
