Today, Stuttgart’s cityscape is the result of consistent city planning that took place in the 1950s and 1960s. The huge multi-lane highway encircles Stuttgart and separates it from surrounding historic quarters. Gas stations, parking lots, car dealers and car washes were originally built as new architectural and infrastructural elements; an integral part of an urban planning strategy that focused on private transport. The various forms of transport were separated spatially, with pedestrians relegated to marked “zones”. The way in which public space became focused on the automobile, pushed other forms of transport into the background. Stuttgart was an important location for the automotive industry and the automobile culture was of paramount importance. This affected all areas of urban life.

Today, Stuttgart is trying to find a new direction and begin a new chapter of the city’s urban biography. Park management, pollution warnings and the diesel ban are measures intended to reduce the amount of traffic in the inner city. City residents are becoming actively involved in promoting diverse, sustainable forms of urban mobility and defining the necessary city repairs and infrastructure needed to make the city an enjoyable place to live. This change is tangible, but it is not yet visible in many areas. What is preventing such future-oriented initiatives and how can they be accelerated? What are the factors involved and who are the people behind the changes? What will mobility look like in Stuttgart in the future and how will new approaches to mobility change the city? This workshop will be addressing these questions from an interdisciplinary perspective.

This workshop is being offered as an interdisciplinary key skills qualification. In order to gain three credits in the SQ module, you must attend the entire program. Anyone who does not require the credits is invited to participate and attend the lectures.
