Anna Christina Schütz: How the characters fail to live up to the assertiveness of the illustrations. Chodowiecki illustrates Goethe’s Werther

Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki’s illustrations for Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther accompany the, primarily unauthorized, text. However, these works of art do more than simply illustrate the story: Anna Christina Schütz shows how they are also assertive images reflecting their own mediality.

Registration is not required. Free of charge.
