This guest lecture by Professor Christoph Reinprecht will focus on the subject of gentrification. This phrase originates from the English word “gentry”. Gentrification is currently a contentious topic and involves the process of upgrading an urban city quarter by renovating and rejuvenating it. This often results in the residents being displaced by wealthier social classes and can even result in entire social groups being driven out. This term is often used as a political catchphrase and is important to urban research, although the scientific theory has done little to really explain its prevalence.
In this lecture, Reinprecht will explain the meaning of the phrase and, using Vienna as an example, he will endeavour to illuminate why gentrification is so problematic and which dynamic processes characterize it. In particular, the lecture will consider what can be done to prevent the process of gentrification.
