Opinions collide, public debates escalate to poisonous arguments, bitter fights over interpretation lead to absurd accusations and apologies, a respectful way of communicating with each other is becoming less and less a matter of course. Media scientist Bernhard Pörksen and communications psychologist Friedemann Schulz von Thun, two prominent names in their field, analyze the communication climate change in their book "Die Kunst des Miteinander-Redens" (The Art of Talking to each other) (Carl Hanser Verlag 2020). In this era of intense irritation and populistic simplification, they develop an ethic of how to talk to each other, combining empathy and esteem with a willingness to argue and to use confrontation to clarify a point. How can we return to a culture of discussion and debate that also teaches us about democracy and how to live with each other?

Bernhard Pörksen, born in 1969, is Professor of Media Studies at the University of Tübingen. The title “Die große Gereiztheit. Wege aus der kollektiven Erregung” was published by Hanser in 2018.
