In the 17th and 18th centuries, gallantry was the prevailing behavioral model that distinguished the elite – both in terms of social aspects and romantic ethics (decency or romantic love) and in terms of esthetics (modern, refined and spiritual art). The revolution in 1789 and the Ancien Regime appeared to wipe out gallantry entirely. However, it still occurred in various forms, whether through the nostalgic memories of an earlier way of life, or through melancholic artistic references (e.g. Verlaine poetry or melodies by Debussy) or even in the form of methods of seduction, which helped draw gallantry back into feminist discussions: is this a charming aspect of French identity, or just a well-concealed machismo?

The historian, sociologist and literary critic Alain Viala will illuminate the diverse phenomena of gallantry from a social and literary studies perspective.

Lecture will be delivered in French with translation assistance.

Upon invitation from Prof. Dr. Kirsten Dickhaut, Institute of Literature.

This event is sponsored by the Robert Bosch Foundation, with funds from the DVA Foundation.
