Writing Competition for members of the University of Stuttgart

October 11, 2022

For its 10th Anniversary, the Writing Center is organizing a writing competition for students and employees of the University of Stuttgart.

Writing competition

All members of the University of Stuttgart are invited to participate. Submit the abstract of your latest writing project, a particularly successful process description or get creative and write a short story. For those who are very short on time, there are quick and easy ways to enter the contest: a 50-word story or a creative word definition. Information and ways to submit can be found in the Ilias-course. What tips can you offer from your writing experience? The best writing tips of all time will be collected on an interactive concept-board.

Writing competition categories

50 Word Story
Can you write a story using only 50 words? This is a true test of your creativity and conciseness! Submissions should be surprising, suspenseful, funny… or all three!

Nonsense word
Everyone has made up a word at some point, so why not submit it to our contest? We want to see your most creative words and definitions. The sillier the better. Puns and ridiculous rhymes are more than welcome here. Limit 75 words. Please keep it clean. Example: senioritis (n.): a decline of motivation and effort shown by school seniors as they approach the end of their school career.

Paper abstract
This could be the abstract of your thesis, journal paper, or conference presentation. You can submit published or unpublished work, as long as it is your own. If your paper has multiple authors, be sure you have the other authors’ permission before submitting. The word limit is 300 words, and submissions will be judged for clarity, conciseness, organization and other elements.

Process description
If you have ever had to write for a science or engineering course, you are likely no stranger to the process description. The process description is limited to 350 words. It may describe any process. Suggestions include: water filtration, the water cycle, the making of machine parts, Rockwell hardness test, combustion engines, electric power trains, etc. Explanations and some examples can be found here: https://www.ieltsbuddy.com/ielts-process-diagram.html

Short story
Here is your chance to show us your creative side by submitting a short story on any topic. Entries may have up to 750 words (approximately 3 pages typed, double-spaced). A few bonus points are available for stories with a social or artistic message.

The best University of Stuttgart contribution of all time!
What is the best invention, discovery or contribution the researchers at the University of Stuttgart have ever made? This could be cutting-edge science from this year, or a page from our history. Write up the story as a blog post for the university website. Maximum 500 words.

Please make sure to include your name in the file that you upload. We will remove your name for anonymous judging. This competition is only open to students and employees of the University of Stuttgart. There are no prizes of any monetary value. The greatest prize is recognition of an excellent achievement!
