Can I participate in the Overseas Exchange Program?

Yes, if the following criteria apply to you:

  • You are enrolled at a partner university of the University of Stuttgart in your home country. Please inform yourself at your home university's International Office if your university is a partner university of the University of Stuttgart or have a look at our websites for our outgoing students. 
  • You want to study for one or two semesters at the University of Stuttgart.

Application process

Deadlines:

April 1 (for the following winter semester)
October 1 (for the following summer semester)

Please contact the International Office of your home university to complete this step before proceeding to step 2.

After your home university has nominated you for an exchange semester, you will be provided with a link to the Mobility-Online portal by e-mail from the International Office of the University of Stuttgart.

After registering your personal data, a user account will be created for you immediately so that you can proceed with registration straight away. 

Via the Mobility-Online portal you can:

  • register for our intensive German course, specially designed for exchange students (4 weeks half-day for € 250,-)
  • decide whether we should reserve a room for you on campus
  • upload your language certificates
  • upload a list of the courses at the University of Stuttgart that you would like to attend (only necessary if you would like to study exclusively in English)

Please note: Only language certificates in German or English can be recognized. If it is a translation, it must have been done by an official translator or your home university.

As of the beginning of May/November, you can apply for admission as an exchange program student via our web-based application system C@MPUS.

To ensure a successful application process, we strongly recommend that you follow our C@MPUS guideline, which can be found in your download area in Mobility-Online.

Follow the instructions given and upload:

  • Transcript of records
  • Higher education entrance qualification
  • APS certificate (from students with Chinese, Indian or Vietnamese documents only)

If your online application is completed correctly by the given deadline, you will be able to download your letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) on the C@MPUS platform. In case you need to apply for a student visa, please submit the letter of admission to the German consulate along with the other required documents.

Once you have downloaded your letter of admission, please inform yourself about our “Prepare your stay” information session, which takes place around January/July each year. In this information session, we will give you the details for preparing for your arrival and provide you with an overview of your orientation days on our campus in Stuttgart-Vaihingen.

From February 1 (for the following summer semester) / August 1 (for the winter semester) you can continue your enrollment via your C@MPUS applicant account.

If you arrive in Stuttgart after March 15 / September 15, we recommend that you start your enrollment from abroad. You can find further information in our  Welcome Guide.

Please remember that you will have to pay a semester fee for enrollment. These are not tuition fees, as exchange students from a partner university are exempt from these!

If you would like to take courses in English*, the following language requirements apply:

*There are only a small number of English-language Bachelor courses at the University of Stuttgart. Participation in English-language MSc courses is possible.

In principle, all (individual) language certificates from the sending university (home university) are accepted.

However, only language certificates that contain an indication according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (ERF) can be accepted.

If necessary, ask the test provider directly or the language center of your home university for a conversion of your language skills in accordance with the ERF.

In addition to the university's own certificates, the following language certificates can be accepted:

English language certificates (correspond to level B2, ERF)

  • IELTS (min. 5.5 points)
  • TOEFL iBT (min. 72 points in total)
  • TOEFL iBT My Best Scores
  • TOEFL ITP (min. 543 points)
  • TOEIC (at least 400 points in listening comprehension and at least 385 points in reading comprehension)
  • B2 First (formerly Cambridge English: First FCE) (160 -179 points equivalent) B2 level)
  • English Test For Academic and Professional Purposes (Etapp)
  • EF Set (Standard English Test)
  • Linguaskill (formerly BULATS)

For the recognition of further language certificates, please contact the International Office directly via e-mail.

  • Goethe Certificate
  • onSET (formerly On DaF)
  • Austrian Language Diploma German (ÖSD)
  • telc German

Tests for higher language levels:

  • German Language Diploma (Level 1 corresponds to B1)
  • TestDaF level 3 corresponds to B2
  • DSH exam: (DSH1, 57-67% corresponds to B2 level)

The International Office guarantees a room in one of the student residences of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart on the Vaihingen campus for all exchange students of the overseas exchange program (no free choice of rooms and residence). The costs for a private room and sharing the kitchen and bathroom are currently between 350-550 €.

Nomination procedure (for university employees)

University of Stuttgart will proactively contact you by e-mail to ask for nominations for the following semester.

The deadline for nomination is 1 October/1 April. If you need more time, please let us know and we will be happy to find a solution. The International Office of the 

Please nominate your students for one (1) or two (2) exchange semesters exclusively via e-mail

The academic year in Germany is divided into two semesters:

Semester 1: Winter semester: October  - February
Semester 2: Summer semester: March  - September

Please send us the following student data by e-mail:

  • surname of the student
  • first name of the student
  • e-mail address of the student
  • student's date of birth
  • name of the home coordinator
  • e-mail address from the home coordinator
  • starting semester (winter or summer semester)
  • duration of stay: 1 or 2 semesters
  • name of the home university
  • country of the home university
  • nationality of the student
  • field of study at the home university.

No documents are required for nomination.

We will contact your students at the beginning of October/April and inform them in detail about the registration and application process.
