In order to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Stuttgart, you must be accepted as a doctoral researcher and enroll as a doctoral student.
The following steps need to be taken:
- Formal registration with C@MPUS (entry of your data)
- Submission of the application documents to GRADUS
- After you have been accepted as a doctoral researcher: Enrollment (official membership of the University of Stuttgart)
Registration
As a doctoral student at the University of Stuttgart, you are obliged to register in the data management system C@MPUS when you sign the agreement on doctoral studies. By registering in C@MPUS, your personal data and your previous study history will be recorded for the processing of your application by GRADUS. At the same time, you can find out about the processing status of your application for acceptance as a doctoral student and complete your enrollment at a later date.

Application for acceptance
Upon registration in C@MPUS, please complete the data for your doctoral project and print out the application for acceptance as a doctoral student. Sign it and submit it to GRADUS along with the following documents:
- Signed agreement on doctoral studies with: Work plan and timetable and information on your individual qualification program
- Curriculum vitae
- Final documents:
- Master's degree certificate and transcript including grades or
- diploma certificate and transcript,
- Magister degree certificate and transcript, or
- a state examination certificate and transcript.
Applicants who graduated from the University of Stuttgart are required to submit simple copies.
Applicants who obtained their degree at other colleges or universities are required to submit certified copies.
Applicants with foreign degree must submit both the Master's and Bachelor's certificates and transcripts. If the university degree documents are not in German or English, they must be accompanied by officially certified translations of all documents. Additionally the applicant is required to submit the form entitled “Formal Equivalence of Foreign Degrees".
Applicants from China must submit the following documents for the Bachelor's and Master's degree:
- Degree conferral certificate and degree certificate in Chinese original and English translation
- Transcript of subjects and grades for the entire degree programme in the Chinese original and Englisch translation
- CDGDC Degree Verification Report for the degree conferral certificate in English
- CHSI Verification Report for the China Higher Education Qualification Certificate in English
- CHSI Verification Report for the China Higher Education Student's Academic Transcript in English

Good to know: GRADUS will examine your application and forward it to the faculty in which you wish to do your doctorate. The decision on your application will be made by the doctoral committee responsible for you. As the doctoral committees usually only meet three times a semester, this may take some time. Please be patient: the faculty will contact you as soon as a decision has been made.
Enrollment
After receiving the letter of acceptance from the doctoral committee, you are obliged to enroll according to the State Higher Education Act. To do this, you must upload the letter of acceptance in your C@MPUS account.
As a full-time employee of the University of Stuttgart, you have the option of deciding against enrollment. If you wish to do so, please complete and sign the declaration for full-time employees [de] and submit it to the Human Resources and Legal Affairs Department.
If no exception is noted for you, GRADUS will initiate your enrollment. The enrollment process itself runs in the Department Application, Admission, Enrollment, by accepting the study place. Please note the information on semester and tution fees.
