Simulation using high-performance computing (HPC) provides key insights for predicting the behavior of processes and products in many fields of science and engineering. It provides essential tools, for example, in the automotive industry, aeronautics and aerospace research, biotechnology, climate research, medical technology, business intelligence, and mechanical engineering, among many others.
The High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) promotes the use of state-of-the-art simulation technologies by maintaining a powerful high-performance computing infrastructure, developing new simulation methods, and providing advanced visualization tools for research, development and production. In addition, through its participation in many EU-wide collaborative projects, HLRS is at the center of a large network of companies and research institutions working to address key challenges facing the simulation sciences, supercomputing, and society.
Among HLRS's areas of expertise are parallel programming, numerical methods for HPC, visualization (including virtual reality and augmented reality), grid and cloud computing concepts, data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the philosophical and social implications of simulation technologies. Users of HLRS's high-performance computing resources conduct research across a wide range of basic and applied scientific disciplines, with an emphasis on computational engineering.
HLRS cooperates closely with companies such as Porsche and Daimler, ensuring an immediate industry focus. It also plays important roles in networks that bring industry and academic research together in close cooperation, including the Automotive Simulation Center Stuttgart and the Media Solution Center Baden-Württemberg. In 2011, HLRS helped to found a limited liability company (SICOS-BW, GmbH) that promotes access to high-performance computing in small and medium-sized enterprises.
Personal Information
Since 2003, Prof. Michael Resch has been the Director of the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart, home of one of the fastest civil computing systems in Europe.He also manages the Institute of High Performance Computing.
Born in Graz, Austria in 1964, Prof. Resch studied technical mathematics at the Technical University in Graz. Work for the Joanneum Research Association in Graz was followed by employment as a technical assistant and department and team head at the Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart and the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart until 2001. In 2002, he became assistant professor at the University of Houston, Texas, USA.
Prof. Resch has received numerous awards, including the Award for High Performance Distributed Computing of the National Science Foundation, the HPC Challenge Award, and the Microsoft Early Contributor Award. He has also received honorary doctorates from the Technical University at Donezk, Ukraine and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Resch is an honorary professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
