MPA: In search of the safe bike lock

March 6, 2023

The Materials Testing Institute (MPA) of the University of Stuttgart tested bike locks for the consumer magazine SWR-Marktcheck with regard to their theft resistance. The results can be seen on Tuesday, March 07, 2023 at 8:15 p.m. in the program “Marktcheck” on SWR.

The MPA team proves time and again that basic research can also have a very practical effect when testing the material of everyday objects for the SWR consumer magazine. Just in time for the new bicycle season, the experts checked bike locks. They scrutinized many different variants on the market. But which one provides the safest protection against bike theft?

Department head Siegfried Gerber and his team tested the locks for stability using tensile tests, cutting tests, sawing tests, and tests with an abrasive cutter, and came up with some interesting findings.

SWR will broadcast the TV report on Tuesday, 07.03.2023 at 8:15 p.m. in the program “Marktcheck”.
