1. Rector


Since 2006 the ultimate responsibility for matters concerning equal opportunities and equal treatment has been with the Rector of Stuttgart University. Together with the Equal Opportunity Commissioner he presides over the Gender Advisory Board.

2. Equal Opportunity Commissioner


The Equal Opportunity Commissioner (Gleichstellungsbeauftragte) exercises her function in addition to her work. She has three female deputies at Stuttgart University and she is elected for a period of two years by the Senate at the suggestion of the Senate Committee for Equal Opportunities. She serves as an advisor in all bodies and is a voting member in the Senate.

The Equal Opportunity Commissioner is the chairwoman of the Senate Committee for Equal Opportunities and she is chairing the Gender Advisory Board together with the Rector.

3. Equal Opportunity Department


The Equal Opportunity Department (Gleichtellungsreferat), staff unit of the Chancellor, is assigned to the Equal Opportunity Commissioner with respect to contents. It works conceptually for the preparation of decisions concerning the equal treatment policy, operationally within the context of various projects and in an advisory capacity for individuals but also for the university as a whole with the aim of integrating gender expertise.

The  Commissioner for Equal Opportunities is responsible for the realization of equal opportunity and equal treatment for employees in non-academic staff.

4. Gender Advisory Board


The Gender Advisory Board (Genderbeirat) works out the gender concept and manages its implementation.

Members are the two chairpersons (Rector, Equal Opportunity Commissioner), the Chancellor, representatives of each area of study and of each status group. Experts are also members of the board.

The Equal Opportunity Department is responsible for the administration of the Gender Advisory Board.

5. Senate Committee for Equal Opportunities


The Senate Committee for Equal Opportunities (Senatsausschuss für Gleichstellung) as an advisory committee has the following responsibilities: supporting the Equal Opportunity Commissioner with respect to content, preparing draft decisions for the Senate concerning the equal treatment policy, proposing candidates for the election of the Equal Opportunity Commissioner and her deputies.

Members are two representatives of each status group and the Deputy Equal Opportunity Commissioners (as guests). The Equal Opportunity Commissioner is the chairwoman of this committee.

The Equal Opportunity Department is responsible for the administration of the Senate Committee for Equal Opportunities.

6. Deans


The deans are responsible for working out faculty-specific targets concerning the proportion of women on all status and qualification levels which the faculty resolves, for reaching the self-imposed targets, and for the gender reporting of their faculty.

7. Equal Opportunity Commissioners of the Faculties


The Equal Opportunity Commissioners of the Faculties (Fakultätsgleichstellungsbeauftragte) are elected for two years by the female students and scientists of a faculty (from 2012 on: also by the male students and scientists) in order to realize equal opportunities and equal treatment at the faculty. They cooperate with the university’s Equal Opportunity Commissioner. Together with the respective dean they work out the annual gender reporting. They support the faculty in its activities concerning the increase of the proportion of women from students up to professorships.
