Study program structure and content
The four-semester Master’s program builds on a Bachelor’s degree in teacher education and includes two major subjects. In mathematics, you will deepen your subject-specific knowledge. Modules include “School Mathematics from a Higher Perspective” and either “Analysis 3” or “Algebra and Number Theory” depending on your previous coursework. An elective module allows you to explore a subject area in greater depth. The mathematics studies are supplemented by courses in mathematics education and educational sciences. The teaching practicum semester includes 12 weeks of school-based teaching practice and is accompanied by a course on subject-specific teaching methods. You will also write a Master’s thesis in one of your two major subjects or in educational sciences.

Structure, curriculum, subject combinations, organization, and much more
Educational sciences provide the essential foundation for the teaching profession, particularly in the area of educational responsibilities. Building on the educational content – with a focus on evidence-based teaching and learning – from the interdisciplinary bachelor’s program, you will take courses in the Master’s program that prepare you for your future career as a teacher.
Subject-specific pedagogy focuses on the planning, implementation, and analysis of instruction in a particular subject area. They teach both the theoretical and practical fundamentals of teaching and integrate subject-specific knowledge with educational theory and classroom practice.
- You must complete the practical semester during the winter semester.
- The practical semester lasts twelve weeks.
- In addition to teaching at the school, you must attend events at the Seminar for Teacher Training and Professional Development.
- The practical semester is not graded, but you must pass.
If you are studying to become a teacher, the Professional School of Education (PSE), with its university-wide programs and academic advising services, is your primary point of contact. On the PSE website, you will also find open courses that you can take at partner universities.
The PSE is a joint institution of the five teacher-training colleges in the Stuttgart-Ludwigsburg region (University of Stuttgart, Ludwigsburg University of Education, University of Hohenheim, State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart, and State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart). Under the umbrella of the PSE, they bring together expertise in subject-specific knowledge, subject didactics, and educational science to further develop career-oriented teacher education for lower secondary and upper secondary schools in the Stuttgart region, and to prepare students optimally for their future professions.
