Advancing responsible AI through cutting-edge research, innovative teaching, and strong partnerships

AI in research

The University of Stuttgart is among Germany’s leading centers of AI research. In close cooperation with international partners, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence develops new methods for machine learning and robotics. Through the SimTech Cluster of Excellence, its membership in the ELLIS network, and its partnership with the Robotics Institute Germany, the university integrates technological and sociological research on AI. The planned AI Factory HammerHAI will provide infrastructure for industrial AI applications. Initiatives such as IRIS also address the societal implications of intelligent systems.

AI in Teaching and Study Programs

The University of Stuttgart is increasingly integrating AI into its teaching, thereby providing students with technical foundations and a critical, reflective approach to AI. The Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Artificial Intelligence & Data Science teach technical and analytical approaches to working with and evaluating data. AISA certificates and lecture series provide hands-on AI expertise. Projects such as INTERACT create interdisciplinary settings in which students collaborate to develop innovative solutions to complex problems and learn to use AI responsibly.

AI Transfer and Innovation

Innovation platforms such as Cyber Valley or ARENA2036 as well as university institutions such as the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Science (ENI) transfer AI technologies from research to companies, start-ups, and society. The university supports entrepreneurial ventures with advisory and mentoring services. Together with our partners from the Fraunhofer Institutes in Stuttgart, we are working on effective human–machine interaction. The university also offers a wide range of cooperation and information formats for business, administration, and the general public.

Using AI responsibly

The university supports its members in the responsible use of AI through audience-specific guidelines, training, and recommendations.

Dialog on AI

Since May 2024, a university-wide AI forum has been meeting regularly to share knowledge. It provides a forum to discuss current developments in generative AI, address university-specific topics such as strategy, tools, and ethics, and consolidate and showcase knowledge of AI tools and ongoing initiatives at the university.

The university's data protection-compliant AI tool

Responsible AI (RAI) is the central, data protection-compliant AI tool at the University of Stuttgart. It offers functions such as text generation, rephrasing, idea generation, data analysis, and translation. The tool is accessible only in the university network or via VPN and offers two model options.
