Key research areas and projects
Research in the Department of Mathematics ranges from purely mathematical questions to mathematical methods for solving problems in the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, and economics. Students and doctoral researchers are involved in research activities. Members of the department participate in the SimTech Cluster of Excellence, Research Training Groups, and Collaborative Research Centers as well as various national and international research groups and software projects.
Infrastructure for academic studiy and research
The Department of Mathematics is part of Faculty 8 (Mathematics and Physics) and has seven institutes. The lectures take place on the Stuttgart-Vaihingen campus. The department also has a collection of mathematical models and instruments as well as a teaching collection of 3D-printed objects. The Mathematics Student Council represents students’ interests, organizes events, and provides copies of previous exams to help students prepare.
- Institute of Algebra and Number Theory (IAZ)
The IAZ conducts research in algebra, number theory, and representation theory. - Institute of Analysis, Dynamics and Modeling (IADM)
The IADM conducts research in areas such as mathematical physics, nonlinear differential equations, dynamics, and mathematical modeling. - Institute of Applied Analysis and Numerical Simulation (IANS)
The IANS focuses on applied mathematics, modeling, numerical methods, and scientific computing for complex processes in the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, and social sciences. - Institute for Discrete Structures and Symbolic Computation (IDSR)
The IDSR combines algebra and geometry with discrete structures, algorithmic methods, and symbolic computation. Applications include computer science, physics, and biology. - Institute of Geometry and Topology (IGT)
The IGT conducts research in areas ranging from geometric topology and knot theory to Riemannian and spin geometry. - Institute of Mathematical Methods in Engineering, Numerical Analysis, and Geometric Modeling (IMNG)
The IMNG focuses on mathematical modeling, optimization, and the control of dynamic systems. This includes inverse problems, in which the underlying causes are inferred from the data observed. -
Institute of Stochastics and Applications (ISA)
The ISA combines stochastics, statistics, financial mathematics, and machine learning. These methods are used in fields such as the natural sciences and engineering.
