Transport Engineering - Bachelor's study program

I work on planning expansion and reconstruction measures for federal and state roads in the Stuttgart region. A key challenge lies in balancing multiple factors, including traffic safety, traffic efficiency, environmental sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. The goal is to ensure a sustainable road network. My studies have provided me with a solid foundation in road planning and construction, which I have been able to apply regularly in my professional work.

In infrastructure and strategic service planning at NVBW, I am involved in the planning and coordination of regional passenger rail transport (SPNV) projects. This is done in cooperation with the State Ministry of Transport. The broad range of topics covered in the study program is a great advantage for me. The combination of theoretical knowledge gained during my studies and the practical experience from voluntary internships has enabled me to quickly adapt to the complex day-to-day realities of project work. I am very pleased that my studies enable me to make a positive contribution to the future of regional passenger rail transport.

As a research assistant in the field of transportation, I am closely involved in developing new approaches to transport planning. We work closely with other research groups, policymakers, and planning offices to develop solutions that are practical and feasible.

At the moment, I am working on bicycle traffic planning, for example. We use a computer-based transport model to determine where the cycling network in the state of Baden-Württemberg should be located and what expansion needs arise for cycle paths along federal and state roads. My task is to consolidate data from various sources into a form that is useful for transport planning.

There is still much to explore in the field of transportation, such as the impacts of new mobility modes and concepts, optimizing traffic flow in cities, planning public transport efficiently using algorithmic solutions, and much more. In addition to research, I also take on teaching responsibilities and supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. My goal at the University of Stuttgart is to complete my dissertation and earn the Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) title.

I work in public transport planning (PTP), focusing on traffic surveys and statistics. In this context, I focus on understanding how many people use public transport and how they reach their destinations. Based on demand data, our main goal is to improve transport connections in terms of efficiency and reliability. The tasks in transport planning require interdisciplinary skills and a broad technical knowledge, as well as an understanding of economics and politics. This challenge makes my work consistently engaging and interesting. I continuously expand my expertise in order to develop creative solutions.

As a transport engineer at the Civil Engineering Department of the City of Stuttgart, I am responsible for new urban construction projects and the renewal of traffic signal systems. Our goal is to work together with our partners (e.g., road planners, engineering firms, signal construction companies, and transport operators) to make Stuttgart’s intersections smart, accessible, and “green” for all road users. My responsibilities also include advising on traffic management for predictable events. In this role, I draw on the fundamental transport engineering knowledge I acquired during my studies. I regularly draw on this expertise in my daily work.

I work at an engineering firm in Stuttgart that specializes in transportation-related topics. I am primarily responsible for tasks in transport planning. This includes creating and refining traffic models. Such models are used to assess the impacts of infrastructure measures. In addition, I assess the capacity of intersections, road sections, and parking facilities, evaluate the accessibility of driveways and parking areas, and develop site access concepts. In all of these areas, I am able to draw on a wide range of knowledge from my studies, including transport planning, traffic modeling, transport engineering, as well as road planning and design.

At the Mobility Center Baden-Württemberg, I lead the “Traffic Management” department. My team and I ensure that intelligent technology is implemented on the roads, allowing us to optimize traffic management. We are currently launching a major project: The establishment of the state’s own traffic management center, which will eventually monitor over 35 tunnels.

The public sector provides civil engineers with numerous varied and responsible professional opportunities. Before joining the Mobility Center, I worked at the Ministry of Transport and the Stuttgart Regional Council. What I especially value in my profession is the opportunity to shape the future, keep society functioning smoothly, and make a meaningful contribution to the common good.
