Linguistics - Bachelor's study program

As a teacher of German as a Foreign Language, it is my responsibility to support people from around the world in learning German. I see myself not just as a teacher, but rather as a coach and motivator. Because you spend a lot of time with the course participants, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and take pleasure in their progress. During my bachelor's studies in German and English studies, I gained insights into the theory of language. But it was only through my two-year Master's degree in linguistics and my supplementary studies in German as a Foreign Language at the University of Stuttgart's Language Center that I became passionate about the idea of becoming a German teacher. For me personally, this combination was the perfect choice, and I am glad to have found my dream job through this path.

As an editor, I am responsible for all texts written for the company’s clients. These texts are then included in our software manuals or in cross-company databases. As a proofreader/editor, I review and correct texts intended for external recipients. My linguistics degree is very helpful in my field of work. Thanks to my studies, I find it easy to formulate complex technical matters in a way that does not cognitively burden the reader more than necessary. In addition, I have a keen eye for other people’s texts. I do not optimize them based on intuition, but revise them based on scientific knowledge.

As a content manager, together with my international team – consisting of several colleagues in Berlin and Barcelona – I am responsible for maintaining the content of the Mercedes-Benz websites. In the digital age, in addition to content creation, search engine optimization (SEO) and tracking user behavior play a central role. Both are “basics” of modern marketing strategies that I have acquired through my professional work. My studies in linguistics help me to quickly and independently familiarize myself with new subject areas time and again. This is an essential part of my working environment.

The linguistics study program showed me how diverse language and communication are. Together with scientific methodology, these were the foundations of my professional career - whether, or precisely because, I work in marketing today. Another advantage is that I have learned to quickly familiarize myself with a wide variety of topics, understand them, and work on them. If you consider current developments in marketing communication – keyword: content marketing – these are the fundamentals I need in my professional work. A major part of my job involves creating content - texts, photos, videos - for both online and offline communication. This involves not only advertising but also editorial content.

In the Linguistics study program, I engaged with many different languages. This sparked a strong interest in (foreign) language acquisition and multilingualism. Combined with the so-called extended curriculum “Learning to Teach German as a Foreign Language,” I was able to pursue this interest professionally after graduation. For example, I worked at the Goethe-Institut in Sydney as a German as a Foreign Language teacher and as a project coordinator. Now that I am back in Germany, I work as a tutor in the Mongolia project at the Language Center of the University of Stuttgart. There, I supervise future German-as-a-Foreign-Language teachers who support Mongolian learners of German in their language acquisition. At the same time, I am pursuing a Master’s degree in Language Theory and Language Comparison.
