Study program structure and content

Over six semesters, this study program combines comprehensive training in modern historical studies with targeted preparation for teaching at the secondary school level. The individual modules to be completed are structured sequentially:

  • The basic modules combine a general introduction to the methods and techniques of historical scholarship (technically referred to as ‘propedeutics’) with initial thematic overviews across the different historical periods.
  • Core modules: The content is further developed in greater depth, with elective options available depending on individual areas of interest; particular emphasis is placed on systematic work with primary source texts.
  • Supplementary modules: The skills acquired are applied in exemplary fashion to freely chosen topics from the various historical periods.
  • Career-oriented components (including a mandatory four-week internship) and so-called "subject-related key competencies" – which may also include Latin courses, if required – complement the program.
