Linguistics

Linguistics, also known as general linguistics, deals with the structure of languages. Linguists are interested in all languages that are or were spoken, written, or signed by humans.

In the study of linguistics, students learn how sound and writing systems, sentence structure, and the level of meaning of language can be analyzed. The program of study particularly imparts the ability to analyze concrete linguistic material (words, sentences, texts, utterances).

A guiding question of modern linguistics is: What happens in our minds when we produce and understand utterances (cognition)?
